Easily accessible from Okutama-machi station.
People were camping by the river, despite the Sunday evening. But I can relate, as the sight of autumn leaves are utterly beautiful. If you plan to come by car, there's parking near the camping grounds, which cost at least 700 yen. If you want to park overnight, ask for their rates.

JR青梅線 奥多摩駅より徒歩5分。多摩川と日原川が合流する地点周辺の渓谷。「奥氷川神社」前の坂を下ると、すぐ「氷川小橋」が見えてくる。「氷川小橋」は日原川に架かる。そこから3分ほど歩くと多摩川に架かる「登計橋」が見えてくる。「氷川渓谷遊歩道」は40～50分程度の散策ができるようになっている。行き先はいろいろとある。

御嶽渓谷を散策した後、ＪＲ青梅線の御嶽駅から奥多摩紅葉
ローカル列車に乗車し、奥多摩駅に移動し、氷川渓谷を散策
しました。スタートしてすぐに出会うのが”奥氷川神社”で、
この神社の境内にある”３本杉”がなかなか珍しい杉でした。
奥氷川神社をお詣りして、渓谷沿いに歩いたのですが、山梨
県の西澤渓谷を歩いた時と似たような感覚がありましたので、
多分、散策路が似ているのかも知れません。途中の渓谷沿い
の紅葉は、この渓谷もなかなか美しい紅葉が見られました。
この渓谷には２か所に吊り橋が掛かって、その吊り橋を渡っ
たり、又、大きな赤い橋がかかっていて、その橋の”赤色”が
渓谷の川の水に映えているのが美しかったです。

I visited one summer day as daily trip with my husband.
Okutama station is 2 hours (1,080 JPY for 1 way) away from Shinjuku, There are bearutiful headstream of Tama(gawa) river and aesthetic suspension bridges as well.
The most casual treking route starts from the Okutama station. It goes across the big bridges look down the river stream followed by well maintained path.
Artificial bridges but matches beautiful nature very much.
We could easily went throuth to riverside and enjoyed playing by water, with looking on local boys even dived into river water from rocks.
We walked whole distance for around 45 mintes in green fresh air.
Although there were BBQ or fishing sites in Okutama, we choosed to have lunch with local craft beer at Cafe VERTERE, located only 1 minute from Okutama Station on foot.
Natural spas are also availabe around there however some of them were locked-in for overnight guest, since our visit was just in summer vacation season.
We finally found an appropriate one and reflreshed after sweating walk. (Even if you do not bring towels, you can buy one at the counter through)
