Place that I did not know, nice, relaxing but I was not enthusiastic at most, the only beautiful thing is the Visconti fortress, otherwise the sad country.... from the fortress you can see a beautiful view, you eat very bene.pero!

Finally, after my two previous visits to Castell'Arquato (2016 and 2018), last Sunday I managed to access the Rocca Viscontea 🏰 which, for reasons of time, in the past I had been unable to do anything but admire 👀 externally. Having arrived on site at 11.00 🕚 following our guide, Mrs. Laura 👩🏻 (we had purchased the ticket online 📱 including the collective guided tour of the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria ⛪️ and the fortress itself 🏰), we crossed the entrance listening immediately the introductory explanation 🗣 on the history and characteristics of the structure. After thanking and saying goodbye to the lady 👩🏻, we gave ourselves a free tour 🚶🏻♂️🚶🏻♀️ of the internal spaces, including those of the suggestive tower. The latter is worthy of note, completely walkable up to the panoramic terrace (obviously the 360° view is magnificent) adorned with dovetail battlements. On the various intermediate floors there are instead didactic panels 🪧, photographs of the fortress before the redevelopment works, armour, helmets, shields 🛡, swords 🗡, halberds and scale reconstructions of both medieval machines (cranes, hoists, battering rams, catapults etc.) than of the same tower; in addition to the aforementioned terrace (which we could define as "major") there is also another one on the top of the "minor" tower (actually half the height), which is accessed via an internal staircase. Regarding the remaining spaces, in truth, there isn't much to say since everything boils down to the lower courtyard, reachable thanks to a short dirt path (the fortress was in fact built along the slopes of the hill on which it stands finds the village itself). From the courtyard, looking 👀 in the direction of the keep, you can appreciate the peculiar perspective effect of the structure as a whole. Furthermore, as explained to us by our guide 👩🏻, another singular characteristic of the fortress is that it has numerous "fake towers" (in practice only equipped with external profiles), in addition to the two actual ones described previously. Specifically, these were architectural devices that served to mislead any enemies who intended to attack the village. Clearly, a certain number of towers ipso facto implied a corresponding availability of soldiers tasked with defending them; for this reason, looking at the fortress 🏰 from the Val d'Arda, one could get the impression that it had a much larger garrison than the only thirty soldiers actually present. Finally, a few notes on the history of the complex can certainly benefit the most curious visitor. The construction 🏗🧱 dates back to the period between 1342 and 1349 at the behest of Luchino Visconti. Starting from 1404 it became the property of the Scottis and subsequently of Filippo Visconti. In 1466 it became part of the Sforza dominions who maintained control of it until 1707, when it was annexed to the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza. The opening days are from Tuesday to Sunday (in the months of March, April, May and June) observing the following times:
• 10.00 🕙 - 12.30 🕧;
• 2.00pm 🕑 - 5.30pm 🕠;
Definitely RECOMMENDED visit 👍.

The towers are also visible from afar and from the village located in front of Castell'Arquato.
To reach the fortress you have to climb to the highest point of the village. We didn't go in to visit it because we had little time.

This imposing fortress is clearly visible from the surrounding hills, as it remains in the highest part of the town. Its tower dominates the Piacentini Hills and the view is fantastic.

The town is a small medieval jewel where you can spend a very pleasant day because it reserves many surprises. The fortress is interesting for its history and inside it preserves copies of armor and models of war machines with explanatory panels on war techniques and those of construction of these buildings. Worth visiting, in addition to the fortress, are the Collegiate Church, the Diocesan Museum, the Geological Museum (unexpectedly rich and well documented, with many finds from the area) and the Illica Museum (unique about this little-remembered librettist).

Ciao
