The most beautiful walk, among those without significant differences in height, in the Abetone area.
2024年6月 • 家庭式
Those who don't know the Abetone area well, might think that it is a place especially suitable for winter sports, but not for walking at high altitude: the mountains that surround it in fact appear so steep, that one can legitimately assume that there are no halfway between an (unattractive) walk in the center of the town, and some tough climb (primarily the one to the scenic “Lago Nero”).
However, this circular walk, recommended for those who want to take even long walks from Abetone (in this case approximately 7.7 km), but without significant differences in altitude, is possible. It's suitable for everyone.
The path is also highlighted (with map) on the official tourist website of the town, i.e. abetone-cutigliano.it (the text is also available in English).
In this website the circuit is called "Verginetta - Casetta di Lapo", from the name of the two points of interest that can be reached at the end of the route.
Most of the route, both on the outward and return journey, takes place in dense woods, especially silver firs (Abies alba) and beeches. It's therefore very shaded.
We are here in fact in the heart of the "Abetone Biogenetic Nature Reserve", established since decades around the Abetone area. An interesting narrative on the Reserve can be found on the web (also in English) by entering its name in a search engine. A large part of the route is also dotted with information panels (but these, sadly, only in Italian) on the flora and fauna of the area.
A little beyond the halfway point of the route, right where the ring begins which provides a different return and outward route, there's an area equipped with a water source (but a sign warns "biologically uncontrolled”), a BBQ structure, tables for eating packed lunches.
From this point, please also note the following additional detour, which will take you a few minutes. A walk of a few tens of meters on the watershed ridge towards the south-west (therefore retreating towards Abetone) allows you to come across, about 50 meters from each other, cylindrical boundary stones, of gray sandstone, very well preserved thanks to the protection of the trees above. These stones date back to the border defined in 1793 between the two states that met here, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and the Duchy of Modena and Reggio. Each stone is engraved with the date, the order number, and the letters "TA" on the Tuscan side, "M" on the Modena side.
Continuing the journey and arriving at the end (Casetta di Lapo, about 1500 mts.) the most gorgeous panorama of the entire route opens up. Here the path overlooks the treeless ridge, therefore the view sweeps freely over the underlying valleys of the province of Modena. The pass is also dominated by the Emilia mountains looming to the north (wooded in the lower part, bare towards the top) and culminating in Monte Lagoni (1962 m). Such mountain, due to its height, precludes the view of Monte Cimone behind it, the highest peak in the entire northern Apennines (2165 m).
Last but not least: the route can also be done in winter, using snowshoes.
