To be clear, this is not the bridge that gave Bridgetown its name. That bridge was built by indigenous peoples prior to the arrival of Europeans, and is now long gone. This little drawbridge sirs on the same spot. It is a basic little drawbridge, purely functional for allowing small boats to access their moorings. It's easy to have a quick look in conjunction with a visit to Independence Square.

We got lucky and were able to see the bridge raise to let a boat out of the area. Very neat experience and lots of history. What a fun area to explore.

Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados, got its name from this bridge. The Chamberlain Bridge is now pedestrian only and it raises to allow boats to pass through. On one side is Independence Square and on the other side is National Heroes Square. You should walk across the bridge. You can take photos from the shore and you can watch the bridge open to allow tall ships to pass through.

Nice pedestrian style bridge that leads into Bridgetown and overlooks the small harbour. Good place to take a few photographs.

This is one of only two bridges in Bridgetown. It's for pedestrians/bicycles only.
The bridge connects the central Heroes square with other side of the Careenage where's the Independence square.
It's in the very center so you'll cross it for sure.

We visited the Chamberlain Bridge in late January 2022. It can be crossed and photographed easy in 45 minutes or less. We were in Bridgetown for three days and toured the island.

Bridgetown was originally named Saint Michael's, but renamed after its 1673 garrison commander colonel Sir Tobias Bridge. When the first settlers arrived here they found no people only a primitive wooden bridge, built by the long-departed indigenous Arawak. This was first replaced in 1628, then over the centuries again and again due to fire, hurricanes, and general detrition.
In 1872 a steel swing bridge was built across the marine inlet channel, allowing access to the inner basin of the Careenage.
The bridge gets its name from the British Colonial Secretary, Joseph Chamberlain who generated funds to build the steel swing bridge. But this structure was dismantled and rebuilt using fiber-reinforced plastic, which is lighter, long-lasting, and non-corrosive in 2005–2006. The counterweighted bridge pivots upward, permitting pleasure craft to pass through to the inner basin.
Standing on the bridge, looking at the yachts, and watching all the comings and goings of smaller boats was very interesting for a retired ship’s captain.
TIP: Great place to take Sunset photos standing in the middle.

Attractive bridge that crosses the waterfront area of Bridgetown and where you find the Independence Arch. Within easy reach of the cruise port.

Hi there, When we were there the Bridge did not open so I looked it up on the internet for you and it states that in 2006 the swing bridge became just a tourist attraction as it was replaced with a lift. Hope this is of some use. The area around The Chamberlain Bridge is very vibrant and full of historic buildings. Enjoy Barbados.
