If you like high pressure sales staff who simply will not let you shop in peace, then this is the store for you. This tactic obviously works on some but for us it was a complete turn-off. Couldn’t get out of there fast enough. They lost getting some $$ from us.

No need to leave the cruise terminal area if you want a relaxing day. There is ample shopping at the port along with a very nice pool area. That includes numerous chairs, some of which are shaded. There was no need to rent an umbrella. The pool was sufficiently deep and had an area to walk around in the water under some bridges. There was a swim up bar and waiters that came around frequently. The drinks were good but the cups are small.

Our cruise ship arrived around 9am. We had a Holland America shore excursion booked for 9am. So we did not get to check out the Amber Cove facility until the afternoon. Our excursion, Mountain View’s and city sights, took us to the mountain top park, then a drive back down to tour Puerto Plata. The bus tour was around 3.5hrs long. It was wonderful. After returning to the cruise port we did walk around the property. We did walk up to the Amber Cove Sky bar to enjoy the 2 for 1 mojitos. Yummy. It was not busy that late in the afternoon, so it was a lovely, peaceful stop. Great views. We walked the pool area before going back on the ship. The pool area looked great. We had a nice visit to Amber Cove, and Puerto Plata.

Amber Cove was the first stop on our Eastern Caribbean cruise. I've heard a lot of rave reviews about the Dominican Republic and holidays in local resorts before, but there's not enough time on the cruise to see much. Our ship docked early in the morning at the port of Puerto, and given that we were on a cruise in December, of course our main desire was to hit the beach, swim and sunbathe.
The cost of a taxi (usually minivans) from the port to Dorada beach (Playa Dorada) will cost $90 round trip, and you can pay upon return by agreeing on a time with the driver beforehand. I take it there's only one entrance to the public part of the beach, from the parking lot to the beach, literally 20 meters through the shops. Sunbeds are paid for. You are assigned local staff who will familiarize themselves with the menu, bring a table and drinks to the sunbeds. Prices are quite American: for a margarita - $10, local beer - 5. Accept cards and cash. Tips are welcome.
It was somewhat windy on the day we arrived, so there were waves and a lot of seaweed off the coast. Not that they get in the way, but getting through the algae into the water to swim is not particularly pleasant.
All in all, you can have a good time on the beach. By the way, along the way we looked at local sights like street with umbrellas or pink street, believe me, paying for a tour and spending 2 hours on it is absolutely not worth it.

Luna (sales person) was the best on our walk to Diamond International. Ended up buying a tanzanite ring. She was very personable and waited on me to look at and decide on what I wanted.

If on a cruise leave the port and search out an excursion. Much cheaper than those offered thru the cruise line. We found Amber Cove to be beautiful and clean. We left the Cove for a tour to Puerta Plata. So enjoyed the tour and our tour guide Pablo. Good time

This is a Carnival Corporation owned gated area. Only Carnival, Princess, and Holland America ships dock here. There can be up to 2 ships at a time. The area that is cruise owned is right there with the pool area and the shops. Beyond the gates is the rest of the Dominican and taxi’s to Puerto Plata which would be the main city there. If you choose to stay in the cruise ship area, to the left is the shopping area. There are many different shops like clothes, chocolate, jewlery, cigars, etc. To the right is the pool area. The pool is large with a lazy river type concept but without the current. The only shade is really under the bridges and those areas get taken quickly. The pool is nice and refreshing. They also play music and do some pool party vibes. Get there early if you can to get prime lounge chair seating in the shade and get into a still empty pool. Once both cruise ships have more people getting off, most of the loungers get taken (and there are a lot) and the pool becomes people soup. There is also a splash pad area for the kiddos. There is a swim up bar which is cool but has outrageous prices. They also serve food at the restaurant with outrageous prices also. There is a skyview bar that you can walk up to for some good views and drinks as well. There are two waterslides that cost $5 for unlimited rides all day. The lines were long. There is also a zipline that literally goes over the pool for $45/person or something and lasts like 30 seconds. Also you could rent umbrellas for your pool chairs somewhere in the neighborhood of $30. It was cool to walk around and see the forested beauty of the domincan (from what you can see there) and it was cool to check out the shops. But I think next time if you aren’t taking an excursion then you are better off just staying on the ship and having a relaxing empty pool day on the ship.

Amber cove very very nice. When you’re on your cruises, go ahead and go. There’s so much to do and people are absolutely awesome. You will enjoy it.

Not much to do or see in Amber Cove. Beaches can only be reached by vehicle unless you're a great walker. Personally, I'd rather stay two days at Turks and Caicos than waste a stop in Amber Cove

I was really upset to learn that NCL Prima would dock at Amber Cove in Dominican Republic, and not in Puerto Plata city center. For just a 15 minute taxi ride the fixed price is $35 each way. Seems like a very pre-planned rip off. Can anyone tell me if there are vans outside the port that can shuttle 6 people back and forth.

Hi, Is it possible to catch a cab from the cruise port (Holland America) to Monkeyland? Our cruise doesn't offer an excursion for this. How safe is it to take a cab there??? Thanks much for any help!!

I cannot find a definitive answer, but being it is a cruise port, I believe it is only open to cruisers, not locals. You should contact Carnival directly.
