Very interesting! The museum is definitely worth the visit. You will see a lot of beautifully preserved pieces of amber.

We went on Eric Tours’ direction with whom we went on a snorkeling excursion at our cruise stop in Puerto Plata. It was a great indication because it is a museum with a short visit of 20 minutes to half an hour. You learn a lot about amber and its importance in the Dominican Republic and you can see an interesting number of different amber species inside, including one with a lizard that is a worldwide rarity. Highly recommended. In the shop you can buy Dominican coffee, amber and barley at good prices and from a reliable source.

This may have recently gotten a name change. We went to the Ambar Mine Museum in the downtown Puerto Plata downtown area. We enjoyed our tour with Rasiel. She was a wealth of info and an enjoyable guide. We got to taste some Mamajuana, a spicy rum mix and observe some cigar making. All in all a quick, fun stop!

Stefanie was an amazing guide and gave so much information about the cigar process and tobacco. Loved the experience from smoking a cigar to tasting the rum. Excellent!

The visit to this museum is an important and interesting one to be able to know more closely the origin of amber and its history that it represents as such... it is very good this experience for our historical and cultural enrichment around the Dominican Republic. There is also a shop in which you can appreciate and purchase amber and larimar pieces mounted in silver and gold. The purchased piece is certified-original amber or genuine barley extracted from its mines in the area.

Very interesting and informative. I definitely grew a new appreciation for Amber and had to add some to my jewelry collection! Nice staff and definitely worth a stop.

Looks so big and impressive online, in reality tour while by tip of guide so no entry fees only about 15 minutes at best. It does have good information, but overall it is an Amber and Laramar gift shop with a good story. Something to do if you are already in Puerto Plata, but stay at your resort rather than making trip here.

Average trip. We arrived at approximately 11 am and made our way towards the entrance of the museum. After buying our admission tickets, we waited in the lobby for the next tour to start. The tour guide started promptly and took us from room to room in the museum, explaining the history and importance of amber in the Dominican Republic. There were multiple artifacts related to amber out for display, along with several informational plaques, detailing what we were seeing in front of us. Towards the end of the tour, we received a demonstration on how to roll cigars. There was a gift shop with various amber and tobacco products located in the last section of the building, however the items were quite pricey and we ended up not buying anything.
Tip: I recommend spending 45 minutes here if you truly want to see everything.

They don't have a private parking. So you have to look for a space on the public street in the city center. I don't remember, if it is charged.

I do not remember seeing blue amber but the golden amber seemed to be just as clear as the pieces with items in it. I would not say either one particularly shines.

How do I book a tour of the museum, nothing was found on their website? No, I don't want to book a tour that stops there, I want to go directly to the museum for the Tour.

I am looking for a blue amber pendant and am wondering if it would cost to get into this museum from our hotel. I am hearing you can get here free but is it free from Iberostar hacienda Dominicus? Also how much would a blue amber pendant cost here?

I don’t know much about stones, but I know for certain they sell Larimar and Amber.
There may be a trip which you can do through your holiday rep, and it would probably be included in a city tour.
Alternatively you could book a taxi, and I’m guessing you would be paying $40 - $60 (I normally stay at Bachata, so I’m trying to remember how far away Iberostar is)
The actual entry is free, but the guide asks for tips at the end.
The shop itself is below the museum. Again, entry is free.
The jewellery is decently priced. Not sure how much what you’re looking for would cost though. :)

I will suggest to take a taxi and go there yourself or with people, if you take a tour then you have 3hrs to visit store and amber museum (its free) but was prefer to stay more and walk in Puerto Plata city, some people are poor but friendly and you see a lots policeman. First time I was scare but after I was ok and next time I will go then I will take taxi and visit on my own.

We are coming here in May on a cruise for our anniversary and I wanted to get a little info.... Is there a cost to get in( there is a little confusion from trip adviser, some say yes, some say no) And is it far from the dock?

Hi Belinda, we stayed at Riu in January which is very close to the dock. You can see the Amber museum as part of a tour as mentioned in other responses or you can go on your own which we did. If you go on your own the cost is 25 pesos each to get in- about 35 cents CDN. You can take a taxi from the dock for $5-$25 USD each depending on how much you're willing to negotiate! We actually took the public bus in town and explored independently for a few hours. Hope you have a great cruise!

It is in Old Puerto Plata near the Cathedral. It is a fair distance from Playa Dorado. Can't say for sure how far but you cannot walk. Sorry I do not know more. We had a car and drove in from Sosua.

According to website Monday-saturday atleast from 9-6. Thats when they have guided tours, so they should atleast be open then :-)
