We walked several kms to visit the El Rey archaeological site in Cancun only to find it closed and the museum absolutely empty. A local told us it is closed for the next year at least. The official website made no mention of its closing. Disappointing.

A "long rectangle" lined with ruin structures along both sides is this site (actually I would say more of an "appearance of long length" due to its fairly narrow width but yes you can walk back that length in like 5 minutes from the far end after seeing all the structures) where I was most impressed by these two temples or palaces with multiple rows of short vertical pillars which quite likely is a style "unique to the Yucatan" having seen one such structure at the small San Miguelito site adjacent to the big Mayan Museum right in Cancun & was also to see later on another one at Chichen-Itza (on a "grander scale" though with a lot more rows of those pillars) but having seen none such structure at the sites further down south in Central America (Copan, Tikal & Xunantunich) and also later on at Teotihuacan which is outside the Yucatan. In any case, not much time is needed at this site with all the structures being "relatively small" which are also either roped off or with signs on their steps not to go up (also another uniqueness of the management style or such of the sites in the Yucatan with the site structures "just for viewing", unlike those outside the Yucatan where I was able to go up their pyramids & such to enjoy those structures "up close").

And nearby, actually pretty much just across the street from this site (to the left on Blvd. Kukulcan after coming out of here and across the street shortly afterward) is a "viewing deck" overlooking the beautiful Playa Delfines (with a number of straw umbrellas on that "pretty wide" beach) & the "deep-blue" sea beyond and where also to do is a nice photo-op with the big colorful 'Cancun' sign at just steps away from the deck. Also, not too close to this site but just at a 5-to-10-minute bus ride to the north (from across Blvd. Kukulcan where there's actually a bus stop right in front of the 'Cancun' sign) is Museo Maya de Cancun with the adjacent small ruin San Miguelito (as mentioned above) where yes both the indoor displays & the outdoor ruin are "fairly average" but overall a worthwhile site.

This is a neat place to visit w/out going to the big guys like Chitza -I go for the Iguanas - pack your napsack with a boxed lunch from your hotel and bring some cut fruit or bread to feed the little monsters (you may have to be sneaky to do this). I also put in my napsack a swimsuit - nice little alcove beach there nearby

We visited here what seems like a lifetime ago in March, before the current COVID-19 pandemic.
El Rey is located right in the middle of the Hotel Zone in Cancun. While it is not the most famous or largest Mayan ruins, it is certainly the easiest to visit. In the Mayan history, this site is an early one, dating to around 250-600 AD and was occupied right up until the Spaniards arrived in the 15th Century, when it was abandoned.
The great thing about El Rey is that while everyone thinks of Cancun as a resort town (which it is) and a great beach town (which it is) and a great party town (which it is), Cancun is surrounded by historic Mayan archaeological zones, which is just perfect for a history buff like me.
If you want to squeeze in a little culture while you’re in this wonderful town, but don’t want to spend 2 hours driving to one of the more famous Mayan sites, or if you’ve seen the other sites and want to see another, I’d highly recommend a visit.

Small site of ruins. Federally run so it only takes $55 pesos. Little english translation but you get the idea. If you are not far, it is a nice short change from the beach. Hats a great idea. Took the R1 or R2 bus for $1 US.

Nice archaeological site with a few uncovered remains of the Mayan Civilization. It's one of the few still standing trading post along the coastline of Yucatan, for which I would recommend very much a visit. It's close to Playa Delfines in the hotel zone of Cancun, so, if you're going by bus, there's a very convenient stop nearby. It should take roughly 40 minutes by bus to get there from the city centre. Another option is to go by car. There's a small car park across the road, which charges a fair amount, but it is not inside the archaeological site. Make sure to carry extra cash with you as it is not a busy site, and, although card machines are accepted, network conditions may vary. Also, do not forget to take water bottles with you as the heat usually increases a lot throughout the day (there aren't too many trees for shadows), specially in days like the one I've been there, in which skies where quite blue with only a few clouds.
