Have attended talks here, but think their exhibitions and bookshop really set it out from the rest and showcases the variety of the architecture world.

We visited the 'Forms of Industry' and 'Architectural adventures in mass media' exhibitions'. The first a more delicate comparison of photographic biopsies of industry - like half a container ship, almost Damien Hirst style! The latter an intro to virtual reality and history of architecture's inherent links to forms of communication.

Both were free, accessible and intriguing - everything here seems to project a curation from people fascinated in their work, without being over indulging. The building and area add to this feeling of course. A great place to bring teenage nieces/nephews in considering career ideas I would imagine - or for general interest in the build environment for others.

We visited the RIBA HQ to see two exhibitions: LÁSZLÓ MOHOLY-NAGY IN BRITAIN: BETWEEN THE NEW VISION AND THE NEW BAUHAUS and BEYOND BAUHAUS - MODERNISM IN BRITAIN 1933 TO 1966. Both were very interesting and well presented. I particularly liked the Moholy-Nagy as it was set in the better gallery space. The building itself is also interesting to explore. The Cafe was good but the service rather slow. There is a small but good architectural bookshop.

Maybe it was hope over expectation but was rather disappointed to see the size of the gallery space at RIBA. That said the exhibition itself contained a nice selection of items, mainly architectural drawings but also including photographs, publicity materials, video and a few quirky other items. Sadly the lighting was a tad subdued so it meant a lot of squinting to read the notes on each exhibit. However there is a extra brownie point for having the friendliest security at any exhibition I’ve attended!

Having enjoyed watching 'Landscape Artist of the Year' on Sky we visited to see Fujiko Rose's painting she completed for winning the competion. It is a stunning piece of work, the television cannot do it justice.

I had been meaning to visit for some time, but had to see the Bauhaus exhibition as a fan of the movement.
A very small exhibit but interesting to see how Bauhaus influenced british buildings.
Excellent book shop for architecture fans.

The building at 68, Portland Place was purpose built between 1932 and 1934 as the headquarters of the Royal Institute of British Architects when it was officially opened by King George V and Queen Mary. It is built in an art-Deco and Imperial (late) neo-classical style, the art-Deco most evident in the bronze doors, architectural motifs and trams-storey main window. Inside are a library and conference rooms. A brasserie and cafe are open to the public.

Both my grandfather and my great-grandfather were architects. I was seven when my grandfather died in 1955 and consequently had very little knowledge about either. I visited the RIBA's library to look up their obits in two publications. The indexing was superb and I had no trouble finding the information and making photocopies for which a charge was made. Be sure that the library is open to the public on the day of your intended visit.

“Make it Happen: New Community Architecture”

The Venue
... institutional museums - no, here you won’t find corridors after corridors, paintings of past presidents or obscure references that are only relevant to insiders. Here all you have are temporary exhibitions.

And very temporary indeed – they change them every one or two months. It’s hard not to imagine a line-up of architects waiting to showcase.

The Exhibition
1. … centres on three hidden theme: austerity, the privatization of (council) buildings, and the role of architects in preventing this.

2. You’ll see how communities have benefited from architects through the examples of Hastings Pier, Manor Park Library and many many more.

3. Imagine what it’s like when architects come to the rescue. And find yourself a glimpse into the low-end of architecture – much neglected, but equally noble – by offering changes but with minuscule budgets.

(The story of Hasting Pier shows the importance of community campaigns – it reopened in 2016 with the help of a London practice.)

While the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) received its Royal Charter in 1837, its current headquarters at 66 Portland Place is an art-deco masterpiece by the architect George Grey Wornum opened in 1934, with a later 1950’s extension to the north at No 68. On the entrance façade are two columns on top of which are sculptures by James Woodford of a man and woman representing creative forces of architecture. Woodford also designed the impressive bronze doors at the entrance.

Its location is not optimal, being half way down Portland Place, between Regent’s Park and Oxford Circus underground stations. In addition to housing the nationally-important architecture library and the headquarters of the RIBA, the building houses a changing programme of exhibitions and other events, as well as a café and the best architecture bookshop in London.

The exhibitions cover a variety of different themes and are spread across three floors. Currently there is an exhibition on the 2nd floor of photographs of historic footbridges over the railways in the UK and the results of a competition to design a new footbridge for the 21st century while, in the Architecture Gallery on the ground floor is an exhibition on community architecture, which feels a little subdued. I’m sure it makes an excellent venue for discussions and events on the subject but, as an exhibition, it could say so much more, given the increasing importance as local authority budgets continue to be squeezed, seen this week with announcements from Glasgow about the condition of the wonderful cast-iron conservatory structures across the city in desperate need of investment and community support to give them new life.

The RIBA website architecture.com is not exactly helpful about what is on at 66 Portland Place as it covers events at several different venues across London and the UK - it needs a filter for users.

Came here to visit the institute and also to see an exhibition of the 2019 Royal Gold Medal winner, Sir Nicolas Grimshaw. Several exhibits showcase examples of his work along with descriptions, models and examples of architectural structures to help explain things further.

The building itself is an nice example of Art Deco, but in a style very sympathetic to the surrounding fine buildings along Portland Place.
