I took the Home & Gardens tour during the week of my birthday in August, 2023. This is a FANTASTIC tour and I met so many wonderful people (5 others who came separately from England Scotland) and 16 others on a Rhodes Scholar trip from all over the U.S.). We got to see many beautiful homes (and castles!) and gardens in Scotland. Sometimes we'd go in a van for the day and the last day we even went by a beautiful, comfortable train to upper Scotland. It is kind of like being a kid in a camp except your own room and bath, great food for all meals (or picnic lunches to take!). I found out last year I am more Scottish than anything else, and I felt so very comfortable in Scotland and all the people I met. So many memories I made and I definitely want to return to Aigas! Sir John and Lady Lucy Lister-Kaye are amazing, professional, welcoming hosts. The rangers (taught there) are also nice and informative! I highly recommend it and NO SINGLE SUPPLEMENT!

We've loved the tour, guides, food and accommodation. It's sad to see some negative reviews hence my positive stance. Only thing I'd say from a purely environmental point of view would be to see an electric mini bus one day. Thanks

We selected the Road Scholar trip that brought us to the Aigas Field Centre for a 7 night stay. Each day taught us about and brought us to a varied selection of Highlands' experiences from the Cullen Battlefield to the Cowden Castle. We took hikes, observed wild life from hides (blinds) and enjoyed the hospitality of Lady Lucy and Sir John. The manor home is amazing and social time and dinners were held there. We each stayed in guest cottages a short walk away. Accommodations were comfortable....it felt a little like staying at a camp for a week but with much better beds and an ensuite bathroom! The field rangers who led our varied experiences are young, enthusiastic and very knowledgeable about the nature, geology and history of the region. They took great care of us on the hikes including helping me down some rather step rock steps on one hike. They also served us tea, coffee, or hot chocolate out of the back of their vehicles for our picnic lunch stops and at tea time if we were not getting back in time for tea at Aigas. The scenery is amazingly varied, rugged and beautiful. Other folks who stayed for a more nature centered week also were enthusiastic about their experiences and the wide variety of bird and plant species seen. Social times were fun too as the Americans in the Road Scholar group met and talked with the local UKers visiting for the wildlife experiences. This was such a great way to experience the Highlands and its amazing environment.

We were with a Road Scholar tour and enjoyed a delightful day at Aigas. The history of the grounds, the beauty of the gardens, the delightful lunch, and most of all the kindness and caring by the Lady and her daughter Hermione. The gardens are stunning with flowers, bushes, sequoia trees and much more. So peaceful and such a commitment to conservation. Everyone in our group loved it.

Went to Uist with the Aigas Field Center. If you enjoy bird watching, walking, great food and comfortable accommodations, you need to check out this trip. Calum, Louis, and Martyn were fantastic guides. The group saw 93 species of birds, 7 mammals, and 10 invertebrates. I’m new to birding, so to be honest, I actually was only able to identify about half the birds (but not from the lack of the rangers and fellow travelers trying to help me.) To get the full benefit on the walks, I would highly recommend renting a good pair of binoculars from Aigas if you don’t have some. The trip isn’t just about nature. You will also visit historic sites and learn about living on Uist.

What a wonderful experience! Beautiful and peaceful property, offering great meals and interesting excursions. At the beginning of the week I met travelers that had visited multiple times and wondered why, after a couple of days I completely understood. Everyone at Aigas were so kind and knowledgeable. A great place to unplug and really appreciate nature.

We had a miserable time here but I should point out that over half the group here for the week are returning customers so clearly many people like it. But if you are an independent traveller, with anymore than a basic knowledge of wildlife, and like being active, this place is probably not for you. The best way I can describe it is a cross between an OAP bus tour and a 1950's boarding school field trip. You will spend many hours every day on the organised trips just sitting on a minibus with 9 other people in the group, getting out periodically to stand by the road for 10-40 minutes staring at something in the distance through binoculars. The whole programme is very regimented. You cannot even go into breakfast until the gong is sounded so that you can queue up for your porridge. Several previous reviewers have moaned about the breakfasts and yet the place has not taken notice. The packed lunches are even more meagre. Evening meals are OK but school dinner-ish and small portions. If like us, you decide to give up on the excursions and go out walking or something active, you will still be hungry. The afternoon tea consisted of a 3 x 3cm square of a plain cake. The accommodation is basic but adequate. The furnishings are old and drab. Overall, for the price you pay you get incredibly poor value.

Dear Rose, we are very saddened to learn that you did not enjoy your time at Aigas. Feedback such as this is very rare for us and we take it very seriously. Having said this, I don’t feel that this feedback is entirely fair. I would like to point out that you booked an Aigas Wildlife Discovery programme - one of our discounted training weeks for new trainee rangers. This programme is a set group itinerary, visiting a different habitat each day, and is our trainee ranger’s first experience of leading a group. I can’t help feel that you might have been better suited to one of our walking programmes or even a tailormade stay. You are right in that to achieve the Discovery week itinerary, timings are very important. Meals are at set times - breakfasts so as to leave for the day’s field trip on time, and dinner is determined by hide visits that evening. We are currently undergoing an accommodation upgrade, and take your comments on board. This is an ongoing project, but we are careful to ensure all accommodation to Aigas is clean, warm, comfortable and welcoming. We make a big effort to relay the message that “nothing is too much trouble” and encourage communication with our guests over any issues that may arise. We wish that you had voiced your feelings with us before leaving as we could so easily have organised a tailormade day or long guided hill walk, or whatever you might have wanted. Equally we cater for many dietary requirements and could have given you more larger portions or a different breakfast very easily if you had asked. We are very proud that 64% of our guests return again and thank you for starting with acknowledgment of this. With regards, Hermione

I highly recommend the field centre. The whole stay exceeded our expectations. We were warmly welcomed and personally shown to our accommodation. We stayed in the Roundhouse which was amazing. The food was lovely from breakfast the packed lunches and evening meals. The experiences we had with the knowledgeable rangers and the hides was exceptional. I would not hesitate to stay here again

This was the first time we had really done any kind of wildlife watching since we were children, and we were very apprehensive about standing out and coming across as idiots. On the contrary, the rangers were so engaging and so patient in helping us to use binoculars, how to identify different birds and really help to build our confidence and enthusiasm. We were given really helpful tips fo the best time and places to spot the beavers and had some very successful hide visits, also seeing the pine martins and wild cats, as well as a host of red squirrels and a young greater spotted woodpecker who was beautiful

The food was exception and whilst we were initially hesitant about communal meals, these quickly became the highlight of our time there and Lady Lucy and Sir John were the perfect hosts.

This is a lovely home owner by lovely people. However if you are visiting for wildlife, save your money. No foxes, one elderly wildcat in captivity. In a week we saw 2 wild deer and 2 wild goats through the telescope. A few seals and glimpses of interesting birds. There is one night waiting in a blind where some critters come to eat peanuts and that is the highlight. They have a great mission of education and the center is a great idea. However wildlife viewing is nearly nonexistent.
