Little Venice, some imagination

Bologna is full of canals but few people know it! Most of these canals are now underground. They were constructed in the Middle Ages to bring water to the city population. This one La Piccola Venezia is reminiscent of Venice, if you can believe it! Sometimes these canals run dry but when we visited there was plenty of water flowing and no smell.

It is a canal that has not been covered and is located near the Garibaldi monument. It can be seen from three streets parallel to the Independence Road, between the Garibaldi monument and the cathedral.

A little hidden glimpse

A hidden corner in the streets of Bologna. Beautiful view from the small bridges over these canals which recall the old customs of the city.
There is also a gate for those of us who want to leave a padlock as a reminder of our visit.

Free and easy to reach on foot. However, it was completely crowded. At the time of the trip, the canal or the basin had no water.

The Bolognese canals

I didn't remember that in Bologna there was a view of water channels that seem to recall those of the lagoon. Thanks to a treasure hunt, we rediscovered these very characteristic details of the Bologna city.

Little Venice

This little corner of Bologna is known as La Piccola Venezia, or “Little Venice'', on account of a canal passing under Porta Govese and Torresotto dei Piella. There was pretty much no water in the canal. So I guess the Venice allusions are aspirational. The dry canal sits between buildings painted in terracotta. Probably better to visit in the rainy season.

Oh my God what a smell

Like (too) many places in Bologna, this place (view from a bridge (called window) at the canal) smells as if you are in a defective urinoir during the mid term of a football game where the beer was free. Nice view but it substantiates that Bologna is sometimes a very polluted city.
