A very nice cathedral that you do not think of outside on the street, it easily disappears into the other buildings around. I think the church should have bigger signs that show that it is there so more people see the nice church. The inside was very ornate and detailed, totally worth a visit.

Amazing, majestic temple. Excellent decoration. We celebrated Christmas Eve and attended an immersive divine service.

The present building dates from 1184 and is the second on this site the first having been destroyed by fire in 1141. A high portico was added to the west front in 1396 which was rebuilt in 1467. A radical remodelling of the interior began in 1575 of which only the crypt and the Capella Maggiore survive. It caused the vaults to collapse which led to the decision to rebuild the main part of the cathedral from scratch. Work began in 1605 with a new facade added in 1743-1747. The current interior is a splendid baroque housing works of art including a Caracci fresco in the presbytery ceiling and a sculptured group in terracotta by Alfonso Lambsrdi dating from the early 16th century. The bell tier dating from the 12th and 13th centuries and accommodates a bell known as ‘La Nona’ weighing 3,300 kilogrammes.

The Cattredale di San Pietro is impressive as soon as you enter. It is the finest Baroque and from the outside you really cannot believe how huge it actually is inside. The large portal was particularly impressive to see in this size. The organ is arranged so that the pipes are on both sides of the choir, which must make for great acoustics. The archaeological roots can be viewed through glass, definitely worth a visit, more worthwhile than the Basilica.

Beautifully decorated church. Huge. High ceilings and beautifully inlaid marble floor.

Such a serene place in Bologna. I went there on my way to Piazza Nettuno. The Church was empty and I could enjoy the quiet and serene corridors of the church. It contains a number of beautiful paintings by various artists.

It is a large temple, very redecorated, with some interesting chapels. We were able to go up to the upper part of the presbytery as an icon of the Virgin was on display. The prominence of San Petronio covers the archiepiscopal seat. Interesting bell tower.

There has been a church on the site since the 4th century. The current church was consecrated in 1184. It has since been rebuilt several times. When you are in Bologna for the first time, the cathedral is worth a visit.

I just happened upon the cathedral whilst wandering along and decided to go in. The main body of the cathedral is nice enough, but I was lucky enough to visit on a Saturday afternoon when the bell tower and crypt were open - which made the visit very special indeed!
Not everyone will manage the bell tower physically, being quite a climb up mostly a spiral “ramp” little more than a single person wide in between the two “layers” of the tower, but the views across Bologna as well as the bells themselves at the top are well worth the effort! The crypt, in contrast, has a small area showing the current excavation work of the original building’s remains which is going on, as well as some ancient frescos and a lovely air of peace generally. A truly lucky find and highly recommended.
