The Church of San Giuliano is a church in via Dei Crociferi where there is a concentration of churches. The original Benedictine monastery dated to the 13th century, but was destroyed in the great earthquake of 1693. The church was rebuilt in the mid 18th century, which still stands today. The building stands well above the ground level and accessible via a steep flight of steps onto a porch bounded by tall metal railings.
The interior has an elliptical plan surmounted by an elliptical dome decorated with white and pure gold stucco. In the centre of the dome is a painting of a saint being presented with a copy of the bible while an infant Jesus looks down from heaven. The most notable of the chapels is the Chapel of the Crucifixion. It has a beautiful sculpture depicting a scene of the crucifixion with the three Mary's looking up at Jesus on the cross. There is a panel of relics protected by glass just behind the sculpture of Jesus.
The upper terrace, cupola and dome are also accessible to visitors and is the second highest dome in Catania. The upper parts of the building are accessed by exiting the nave and up an elegant staircase to the choir. This has views of the nave below, but the choir is likely to be hidden from view by a screen with tight traceries. The terrace is next up and is a large area open to the elements. The terrace has access to the dome and steps to the apex where you get a 360 view of Catania.
The church has provided QR code for an audio guide, which is a superb companion to a visit.

Simple church, but…. After 100 steps to the dome you will enjoy a magnificent view of Etna and Catana. Really worth paying 5 euros per person for it.

Do not miss visiting this beautiful baroque church. Pictures do not do justice to this beautiful and intimate space. You can feel the care and love that still goes into it. It was built between 1741 and 1754. The high altar and chapels are beautiful. This is an excellent example of the beautiful baroque architecture of Catania.

I highly recommend visiting this church; in addition to the particularity of the church itself, a small jewel, you will have the opportunity to go up and visit the ancient choir used by the cloistered nuns, perfectly preserved, as well as access the terrace and lantern with a 360 degree show over the roofs of Catania, on the sea and towards Etna!
Truly remarkable and interesting!!!

Once at the top you will be amazed by the 360 degree view of the city! An unmissable stop if you pass through Catania and also the guys at the entrance are very kind and very knowledgeable.

Church particular for its octagonal plan. The view from the lantern is spectacular and unique for taking photos. You can also see Etna very well

With a few flights of stairs you arrive in the Cantoira where the cloistered nuns followed the mass and then up between the bells and up to the dome. Thrilling. Exceptional panorama

In the spectacular and extraordinary Via Crociferi, in front of the Jesuit College, there is the stupendous late-Baroque church of San Giuliano. The façade, splendid and very elegant, is convex in the central part and is surrounded by a precious wrought iron gate. The magnificent interior has a single octagonal room covered by a pavilion vault with a central fresco. The entire space is full of beautiful stuccoes, frames and profiles in pure gold. The extraordinary main altar, very sumptuous and embellished with rare marbles and gilded bronzes, culminates in a throne for the Blessed Sacrament and above a fourteenth-century Crucifix painted on a shaped panel, while on the sides there are statues of Faith, Charity and 2 angels , all dominated by a crowned canopy: a precious masterpiece!!! On the sides there are 4 splendid eighteenth-century altars, 3 of which are accompanied by valuable eighteenth-century paintings and one with an alabaster crucifix and the statuary group with Mary of Sorrows, Saint John the Evangelist and Saint Mary Magdalene. The space is completed by the suggestive choir, located above the vestibule, screened by valuable and refined grates, with a precious polychrome marble floor. Another pearl of Sicilian Baroque, enchanting, which strikes all the senses with its magnificence!!! From a small side door you can access stairs that lead to the panoramic terrace, where the view is breathtaking over the roofs of the buildings and the domes of the city's churches and ranges from the port to the crater of Etna: what an emotion and what a spectacle!!! It is possible to observe the dome of the church covered by a beautiful loggia. A place of exceptional art and great spirituality, unmissable, definitely worth visiting!!!
