Hoping to do a return ride from Riposto to Randazzo (and back) on the Circumetnea in early June. Struggling to find a readable recent timetable to work out our schedule. Can anyone help or give us an idea of timescale. Thanks.

Judging by social media this is not an easy experience as we confirmed recently. In winter months the train only circumnavigates Etna once or twice a day and usually terminates at two horse towns like Adrano or Rendozzo which both have their charms though you may need to search a bit. As time was short we decided to take the train as far as the former. Be warned this small town has THREE stations and of course we got off at the first which surprisingly as we discovered was the best option. We were originally heading wrongly for Adrano nord which is miles outside the town. On the way back we struggled to find the central station which when we eventually arrived was deserted and track removed. A local helpfully pointed to the ground which on investigation meant the station was beneath the old one. How crazy is that. A long escalator took us down to a deserted and very spooky underground station. Eventually a train more or less on time arrived and preceded to pick up from onward stations what seemed like the entire school population of Catania in its 2 carriages, an event that must take place every school day, poor devils.
Despite that Adrano has an amazing museum located in a beautifully and tastefully restored Norman castle with amazing views of Etna from the top. During your tour You will almost certainly be accompanied by a guide who will try to coax you into a lift to take you to the upper floors- ha not for us spiritedly 60 year olds. Another surprise is the lack of pleasant cafes in the town- most seemed filled with unemployed or elderly men.

Unfortunately the windows of the train were very dirty, so we couldn't see the views! The first part of the journey was un tunnel a lot of the time. The train had to work hard to get up the mountain, and inside of the toilet was very hot!
But it's a great trip in a lovely old train. Lots of fantastic views.

This was a fun trip around the circumference of Etna. The views were nice, although I was hoping to be a little closer to the Volcano. Randazzo is a really cute little town. It was a bit challenging interacting with the locals since we don't speak much Italian, but our interactions were limited. The train we took was quite old, loud, but was comfortable enough, and did have a bathroom.
## How it works
Ok, there is painfully little information on the rail line on the internet. I'm not sure why, I think they could drive a lot of business if they advertised even just a little and had more information available.
Departure from Catania is from Borgo station. The easiest way to get there is to take the metro, and then you just go up the stairs, turn left, walk 50m, and you'll find the ticket office. The ticket seller was helpful and spoke English well. Tickets are fairly cheap at 6.80 euro per person.
The first departure is at 8.05 am, and it is approximately a 2 hour ride to Randazzo. You have just about 2 hours in Randazzo, so we got a cappuccino from a local bistro and saw some cathedrals. We recommend walking to the far side of town from the station (to the Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta). There are some beautiful views at the back of the church. The town itself is a pleasant experience and just walking through it was nice. There are bathrooms at the train station.
From Randazzo it is a 1.25 hour ride to Giarre, where you can easily purchase tickets for the national train to either return to Catania, or continue on elsewhere in Sicily.
Overall this was a fantastic experience.

We struggled to find the train station, it's not that easy to find.
We bought our tickets at the bar not the ticket office. There's very little information & the train left at 12.44 not 12.15.
It was full of tourists & school children on their way home- very full. The youngsters got off within the 1st hour of the journey a few at each stop.
Great views both sides Etna on the right.
You have to get off at Circumetnea, it's two hours to hear gradually climbing impressive views. At Circumetnea you can then return to Carania or get another train to Giarre. That part takes an hour.
At Giarre you walk left from the station (follow the crowd) to a mainline train back to Catania. We didn't queue to get a ticket & showed our €6.80 ticket we started with and the guard seemed happy with that! If we had queued to get a ticket we would have missed that train & waited 1 1/2 hours for the next one! This part lasted 1/2 hour - sit on the left for views of the sea.
Was a great full fun day but tourists supported each other in working out what was going on!

We very much wanted to do the train ride but, having done so, concluded that it wasn't;t really worth the effort. It takes three hours but after a while seeing Etna in the distance loses its appeal. There's no guide (written or person) so it didn't feel informative. This is a commuter train, that's it

Poche corse, coincidenze/orari assurdi, stazioni chiuse, per info un numero che non risponde nessuno! Treno "moderno" senza aria condizionata, ritardi di 40 minuti, senza nessun avviso...

Inspired by Michael Portillo we took this railway journey in mid July 2023 and we loved it. We travelled from Riposto to Catania Borgo station. We took the afternoon train 13.54. There are only 2 train journeys each day- other times are listed but involve buses so watch out for this. We were in one of the old 1950s diesel trains which is what we wanted as it feels nostalgic taking you back to another era of travel. The first leg up to Randazzo gave good views over the bay and of Etna. The train then stops and has a change of driver and then carries on to Catania. This second leg gives amazing views of the lava flows and some moments where the landscape is quite desolate. And then miles of olives and vineyard and pistachios planted in the lava enriched soil. The second half of the stage into Catania becomes very functional with a lot of underground stretches and few views. But getting into Catania was worth it as we took the metro into the historic Centre and we spent a few hours looking at the amazing architecture and piazzas and cathedral and amphitheater. Then we walked to Catania central station (note this is different from Borgo but they are linked by the metro) and took the fast coastal route back to Riposto arriving at the modern station and walking back to the Circumetnea station where we had started and parked our car. The Circumetnea took over 4 hours but you get a unique view of the countryside and a nostalgic experience of how train travel used to be. And it is really good value. We would recommend it but probably not for young children.

This ride is a bit quirky. It was a hot day in June, nothing unusual in Sicily, but the carriages are old and not air conditioned. The first hour or so was hot and noisy until the train leaves the greater Catania area and climbs up. However, it eventually breaks out and the ride becomes an unforgettable experience. The views of Etna are constantly changing, as are those of the surrounding countryside in the opposite direction. The views include masses of pistachio trees. Unique.

This was an excellent trip from Catania to Randazzo! With a couple of hours stop to catch the next train down to Riposito!

Laurent.

We would like to take the Circumetnea train for part of the way from Bronte to Giarre. We will be staying in Taormina. How should we travel to a starting point (either one) and how should we travel back? Is there a train from Taormina to wither one or both that we could take or is a taxi the only timely way to do this? I look forward to your suggestions. Thank-you.

The timetable is on line or you can get a copy at the tourist information centre Catania. There is a metro station next to Catania centrale that connects to the Circumetnea.
