Visited on a Tuesday afternoon as the museum opened.
€3 each entry . The museum took us about an hour to walk around including the 15 min video.
All information boards were in English and Portuguese and the film had subtitles.
Lots of information about the history of the fishing industry.

It was an easy 7 minute walk from the cruise ship port to this award winning Portimao Museum. The museum is set in a disused sardine fish cannery located along the harbor. As we walked into the museum we saw the line of old wicker baskets used to move sardines from ship to cannery. Inside, there is just the one floor space divided into different sections to show human activity in this area from early man to the fish cannery in the 1950's. Information is supplied in the local language and English. It took about 1 hour to view the displays.
The cannery occupies the most space and, for my hubby, was the most interesting. There is a 15 minute excellent documentary film (English subtitles) that visitors can sit down to watch as the process of canning the sardines is explained from start to finish. The film didn't shy away from workers' protests like when machines were used to replace men to complete the welding of the tin cans, and women workers need for on-site child care. After watching this film, we wandered through the cannery area which had the actual machines used to make the tin cans, to the tables where women mannequins prepared the sardines for processing and packed them into the cans. There is no lingering fishy odour in the museum, in case you were wondering. It would have been nice if the museum then sold cans of sardines in the gift shop so we didn't have to walk to the town's grocery store to buy some in order to sample the product.
The other displays were also well thought out and presented. In the early man section, I liked the display of artifacts showing adzes, arrows, and a diorama of a settlement in which huge stones where being moved, and the making of iron casts. One video in this section actually showed how early man had chipped the stone to make those arrowheads and adzes. The Roman section showed the typical Roman jugs/urns for holding wine and olive oil. A video showed archaeologists finding them on the sea floor near a shipwreck. In this section I also liked the small display showing how chips of different colored stone were used to build a pattern for a floor mosaic. There was a big display about building sea going ships as well.
On a Sunday entrance was free - surprise! Local bus stops are available near the museum for visits to the old town or to the resort and beach area (Praia de Rocha).

Quel dommage d’avoir fait 50 km et de se voir refuser l’entrée à 17h25 alors que les entrées sont autorisées jusqu’à 17h30….par la même personne que nous avons croisé ds la rue a 17h45 ….

A small, but great overview regarding the history of sardines. As a sardine lover myself(Surinamese staple food), worthy of visiting. Outside in the water, u can see them in big schools as well.

Insight into history - a bygone era, depicted beautifully! Spend an hour or so here, well worth the visit - especially if you enjoy eating sardines!! It was also free on Sunday - Highly recommend, LOVED this museum 😊

O museu é muito interessante, retrata a situação da época dourada da comercialização de sardinhas, tem várias estátuas para representação dos trabalhos da época, além de outras exposições, inclusive de itens históricos retirados do leito do rio Arade.
