The courtyard area for visitors is quite lovely but we felt a little rushed when we were inside the building. We really didn't get to spend enough time in the museum as it was very crowded.

This is well worth the bus trip (or walk) up. The monastery of St John the Divine/Theologian/Evangelist is gorgeous with ancient Christian artefacts, frescos and gold leaf everywhere. Not too many crowds. The stairs are steep and narrow once you get there. Also, the path to the windmills is not clearly marked - it disappeared twice and we had to ask to find them. Couldn’t find the Cave of the Apocalypse on the walk down, but still a lovely (if steep) cobbled path. Highly recommend.

Very nice religious visit, in a ⁇ immersive environment. Visit the Museum with the Byzantine exhibits on the site of the Monastery. Among others, special images are Archangel Michael with the iconic rendering as a portrait and the miniature hagiography with mosaics. Go early in the morning to avoid the crowd.

Worth a trip to this beautiful monastery. In a fantastic village. The museum is worth a special visit also. Just a lovely place. Keep in mind that is a working monastery so conservative dress and behavior are necessary.

This monastery is on a grand scale and it dominates the local area. It is a striking building and its beauty matches its size. It is an interesting building to visit. There are plenty of interesting perspectives from a photographer’s perspective.

The Monastery of Saint John the Theologian has the village of Chora built around its fortifications. This Greek Orthodox monastery was founded in 1088 on the hilltop of the island of Patmos. The monastery became a UNESCO heritage site in 1999.
The Monastery was named after St. John of Patmos, the author of the Christian Book of Revelation. The cave where John received the revelation from Christ is lower down the hillside.
Many people visit on excursions from the cruise boat tender port in Skala, but a short taxi ride from Skala is a less expensive way to visit. It is a long, steep hike on cobbled streets to make the journey by foot.
This is an active site of worship as well as a museum, so respectful dress and behaviour is expected. The museum has many ancient texts and bibles.
The site can be crowded when cruise boats are in port.

Remarkably well preserved. This fortress monastery was built to help protect the people of the town. The museum inside the monastery and the interior chapel does not allow photos but it's worth the view.

We were on Patmos for a short day during a cruise. We decided to take the "walk" to the monestary. It is a steep hike, not a walk! It has a roughly-cobbled path up the hill. Several in our group turned back 1/2 way up the hill. The monestary is beautiful. Don't miss it. However, if anyone in your group is not up for a hike/strenuous walk, I recommend a taxi! We left the monestary as it closed. There were no more taxis running. It was a long, tough walk back down in the dark (no lighting on the path). We weren't prepared for a hike, so several of us struggled coming down the steep, rough paths w/o tennis shoes/hiking boots. Just wish We would have been prepared.

John the Apostle is said to have written the Christian New Testament Book of Revelations in a cave here. The cave is open to the public and we saw a Greek Orthodox Priest performing some sort of ceremony when we were there. This is a most-see.

I would like to visit the Cave and the Monastery in October, we will arrive in the late afternoon.

How much is entry to the monastery and also are taxis freely available to take you to chora and back to skala. Also is it walkable from skala ?

Entry costs approx 10 euros. Can’t remember! Plenty of taxis from Skala. 7 euros each way. Can take local bus. Ticket costs 1.80 euro.

Hi, me and some older group of people will visit Patmos in few days.Our cruise ship docking at 5.45 too and I am wondering if the Grotto snd Monastery will be open? I know that we van visit the Monastery by bus but May we visit The Cave by bus too?

Yes to both questions I have just arrived home from Patmos and both The cave of revelations and The monastery of St John are open till sunset and are a must see!

That depends on how long you are staying on Patmos and at what time of year you are traveling (and you do mean 5:45 p.m. don't you?)
If you are there in the summer and you make your way up the hill as soon as you dock, then yes, you will have plenty of time to visit the cave and the monastery (although you might want to consider grabbing a taxi, or a bus if there's one there - although the walk is fabulous and so rewarding, it is time consuming, and that might work against you.)
You will love Patmos, it's a very special place.
