We were in Washington for a long weekend. We visited the Capital, Holocaust Museum, and the zoo. On our last day this is where they wanted to go! They had parking in back and a cute cafe in the basement. The basement was full of children’s books. The top was several store fronts of books and unusual gifts. It was a great place to visit!

Iconic D.C. institution. Hosts many famous VIP authors and public figures with their excellent in store lectures at this location and others. Excellent customer service. Support local bookstores. A D.C. gem.

Always a fun place to browse and happen upon new books. Happened upon an interview by NPR's Ari Shapiro of an author; their book didn't interest me, but nonetheless it was fun to watch!

Visited to hear an author speak about newly published book (about female domestic terrorists in the 1980’s). Great venue and experience. The audience questions were interesting, intelligent, and inquisitive. Overall a very enjoyable afternoon and experience. The bookstore is world renowned for hosting famous and significant authors and speakers. Definitely worth the trip up Connecticut Ave to visit this iconic bookstore. Makes one feel hopeful about the future of the world, politics, the US, and retails stores.

Family coffee shop with coffee and tea along with bakery options that also includes a book store with a great selection of children’s and adult choices. There is an area for computers and plug in available.

if you like browsing in bookstores politics and prose should be on your radar on a visit to washington, dc. excellent collection of books and nice book-related merchandise. although i've never been to any, i know that p and p hosts interesting talks/literary events and also has a few bookclubs going. the cafe downstairs has good coffee, tea, snacks and light meals. it's the perfect place to meet friends or to retire to, computer or book in hand, for a happy hour or three. for me, no visit to DC, however short, is complete without a visit to politics and prose.

Pure joy is the face of a four and a half year old girl as she gets to the bottom of the staircase and sees a big room full of books and other things. A very friendly and helpful staff person asks what she might be looking for and she says "butterflies." Quickly five butterfly books are identified and shown to her. Next she asks for zoos and there were other suggestions as well as a puzzle and book about visiting a zoo. After ample time with books and chatting with other kids, she asked to go to The Den for something to drink and maybe some yogurt. On the way she spied cool socks she and her year and a half old sister had received for the holidays. While she lives in Seattle, she feels very much at home at P&P when she visits DC. And after P&P, she wanted to go directly to Sugar Fox for ice cream.
For others, The Den has a new coffee roaster, Vigilante Coffee Company. The coffee is better than ever.
Also, the author events over the spring and into June have been wonderful. P&P is an exceptional and extraordinary community resource on so many levels (and now in several locations across the city).

Great eclectic bookstore with a little bit of everything for anyone. I would love to go back when I have more time to play.

I’m a 45-year-old black man who stands 5’9 with a slim build weighting 175pds with a bald head and beard. Basically, I thought for the most part I didn’t look like a book thief.
I currently work with adults with disabilities and my client who likes to read books, so I thought Politics and Prose was a safe and welcoming environment, but I was wrong.
Shortly after entering Politics and Prose I started to be followed throughout several aisles of the store.
Initially when I noticed the young lady was in every aisle, I was on myself. First thought “I hope she does think I’m following her” then when I move to another aisle, and she follows me at that time I realizes what I was going on.
At that time, I stop and asked the women was she following me. She said no, as her mask cover her mouth and you could only see her eyes, her eyes told the truth, she looked a little shock that I ask her this question after catching her following a black man around a bookstore to make sure he does steal.
Should I be flattered because a white person thought a black man was going to steal a book, since the saying goes “if you want to hide something for a black man put it in a book”.
However, I’m not shocked this incident happened.
Even though this goes against Politics and Prose mission statement, who has been in business since 1984 not 1894, I guess things haven’t changed. For any critics you can pull the video it happens 8-21-23 between 6pm to 7pm at the Connecticut Ave location.
I'm interested in attending a book signing, but I'm wondering how these events are run. At other signings I've attended, the bookstore passed out numbers in the order you got there (and these were limited, so depending who the author was, you needed to get there early!). Since you can pre-buy online and request a ticket, I'm wondering if the tickets are numbered in any particular order? Trying to determine if it will be worthwhile for us to travel the 1.5 hours there (and not arriving until close to event time) or if more tickets get handed out than time available for signing.

I have attended several events over the years. I do not recall numbered tickets. Seating is first come first served. For very popular authors, the organizers have shifted the venue to an auditorium. Most authors stay to sign all books, but I lack the data or universal experience to know that all do. Very popular authors will have a stack of pre signed books, which you may buy but the autograph will not be personalized.
