Loved it! 60,000 MNT for a floor seat, 8th row ticket. Venue is small but beautiful. La Traviata was a great play! Will go back one day

I knew I wanted to see the interior and a show…Dance and music of Mongolia.
It featured indigenous peoples and ethnic groups of Mongolia. The show was great and the interior is fantastic!

Directly across the street from Sukhbaaar Square, one will observe a stunning pink and white building with columns in the front. This is the Mongolian State Academic of Theatre of Opera and Ballet. It was established on 15 May 1963 under the direction of the Central Committee of Mongolian Public Revolution Party. Its purpose was to "bring culture to the Mongolian people". Over the years the repertoire of the State Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet has expanded to more than 100 national and world classical works including 56 ballets (as well as several Mongolian ballets) and 54 operas. At present the theatre employees 270 artists, staff and administrators. On 23 November 2019, I was able to obtain a ticket for that night opera, "Madam Butterfly". Madam Butterfly is an opera set in 1904 Japan, has three acts with 34 arias, duets, trios, choruses, etc. I must admit that opera and ballet are not in my repertoire of exciting things to do. The young lady at the Tourist Information Center encouraged me to attend and I was very hesitant about this venue. After seeing the performance, I glad that I had the opportunity to see a world class performance. The music, customs, and performance was outstanding. Well worth the T 68,000 ($25.00 US) ticket price. The acoustic in the theater are top notch and every seat provides an excellent view of the stage. I'm still not an opera fan but I would highly encourage everyone to visit to this Theater while in Mongolia if possible. It is a remarkable experience.

The Mongolian State Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet is one of several fabulous building situated around Sukhbaatar/Chinggis Khan Square. Both the exterior and interior will wow any visitor! Performances are frequent and very reasonably priced.

Polecam !!

I usually steer clear of "folkloric" shows aimed squarely at tourists, but knowing nothing about Mongolia song and dance, decided to take a chance.
The show was a medley of different genres, from singing to dancing to orchestral music. The throat singing was like nothing I had heard before, quite haunting and other-worldly, but a little difficult to truly appreciate with just a brief performance.
The orchestra was extremely professional and beautifully turned out in exquisite national costume, as well as traditional music they did a rendition of Queen's "We are the Champions", quite an achievement given the nature of their instruments!
The whole show ran without an interval for a little over an hour, with recorded voiceovers in English to introduce each act.

Whether it is a grand performance of 'Eugen Onegin' or 'Aida' or the breathtaking ballet 'Swan Lake,' you are going to enjoy the experience of visiting this theatre. This imposing neoclassical building is to the east of Sukhbataar Square and you cannot miss the pink building. It not a large hall but the acoustics are excellent and almost every seat, whether US$4 (cheapest) or US$12 (costliest), allows you excellent visual access to the stage. You can buy tickets online at ticket.mn but would have to activate the card for 'e-commerce' if you use a Mongolian card.
The theatre opened in 1963 with Tchaikovsky's Eugen Onegin. Prior to that, the Russians had already been sending hundreds of musicians, poets, writers, composers and dancers from Mongolia to Russia to train at the best theaters and conservatories. However, after the end of communism in the early 90's, the 500-seat theatre also died a quiet death, as government funding dried up. It is only in the last 10 years that funding has been resumed and all shows now run to full houses. Other than a handful of students sent to Russia every year to train, Ulaanbaatar now has a few ballet schools, mostly branches of privately run The Royal Ballet Academy, set up by Tuguldur Badral.
If you are in the city, check out ticket.mn for the programme schedule. Whether it's a performance in Mongolian, or Russian, or German, or Italian, you will not regret the visit.

My wife and I have about 5 days in Ulaanbaatar. My wife doesn't appreciate cultural activities as much as I do and will tolerate 1 show. Which cultural show do you think better represents the culture of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia: the Tumen Ekh Ensemble, or the Mongolian State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet? We will be there from October 1-7. Are there any blackout dates then? Thanks in advance for your advice! I had no success trying to visit their websites as I live in China.

I am staying in Ulan Bator 6-12 July. How can I find out before I arrive what (if anything!) is on at the theatre, please?
