Entry is only $2 to get in and the security and staff are very nice and welcoming. There is plenty of information about Timor’s history and the struggle for independence, and the invasions which took place by the Indonesians. The highlight for us was the prison cells, which are gloomy, dark and in tact from their use. It’s very haunted and mysterious in some sections but they provide valuable information and insight into some of the dreadful events which have taken place over the years. Recommend bringing your own water as some signs are outside in the sunshine. Overall would absolutely recommend visiting here on your trip to Dili.

Having already been to the Resistance and Archives Museum (which was fabulous but overwhelming) I had low expectations of Chega! BUT I found it to be one of the most worthwhile things I have done in Dili. It lays out very clearly the sequence of events from the 1970’s till now focusing on the Timorese people and not too much of the behind the scenes action of the international community and governments. You get a deeper understanding of how the Timorese were living their lives. The fact that it is all set in one of the former prisons makes it all the more powerful and poignant. Make sure you see the ‘dark cells’ in the corner of the quadrangle. Very confronting. This is an outdoors museum so take a cold drink and while many rooms are now operational offices, the staff don’t seem to mind if you go in and take a look. In fact several staff members came up to me and gave a great insight into various documents. English widely spoken.

How can humans (Indonesian invaders) be so brutal to the Timorese people for 24 years and yet the Timorese have moved and forgiven the perpetrators.

We visited this ex prison instead of going to the archives museum(I actually did it last time I visited) and spent at least 2 hours.
The prison is half exhibition and half active offices for the organisation making sure these atrocities are never forgotten.
Take your reading glasses and tissues. You probably want to spend at least an hour to read all the information.
If you can, go to the dark cells to have a small experience of what it would be like to be held in this horrid place.

Having already visited the Archives and Museum, I was a tad disappointed by the information provided here, but the setting in a former prison is undeniably evocative.

It's not easy to find the place, there's a lack of signaling from the street.
Exhibitions are inferior to the "The Archives & Museum of East Timorese Resistance",
I advice to go there instead.
Chega! is not worth the visit at this moment, but I really wish it's improved in the Future.

This chilling ex prison is not to be missed whilst visiting Dili.
Various rooms recount the stories and injustices of East Timorese interned by the Indonesian forces.
The dark black cells are particularly gripping.
One room tells the story of the almost 40 year struggle for independence firstly from Portugal and finally from Indonesia.
It is recommended that you visit the ex prison with a local guide.

This museum provides a chance to gain an understanding of the levels of inhumanity experienced during the occupation in an objective way that allows you to make up your own mind.
It also provides a fascinating insight into the Truth & Reconciliation Commission and the difficult path the people of Timor Leste have traveled towards healing the scars left by the occupation.
The strength of the Timorese people is evident throughout the exhibition as is the complicity of the west in turning a blind eye to what they knew to be taking place during the occupation.
I walked away with a renewed sense of admiration for the way the people of this country have navigated a path towards focusing on the future whilst not forgetting the past.
The people of Timor Leste have not allow the past to define their relationship with the rest of the world even though they would be more than justified in being cynical having experienced how quickly powerful nations are prepared to throw you to the dogs when it suits them.
Well worth a visit!
