The atmosphere of the museum is very calm. HTM is 1 USD. AC room. The toilets are very clean. Image captions are presented in the languages officially used in Timor Leste. The struggle of the Timor Leste people to be able to determine their own fate was very strong. There was something that quite shocked me, namely the prison diorama. When I was carried away, suddenly seeing prison bars really shocked me. Overall a very good visit to this museum. It's better if there is a guide that explains in detail...

What an amazing museum, we felt so sad but have so much respect for the struggle the East Timorese had in gaining independence. There is a beautiful place to sit and reflect at the end and we just sat quietly trying to process. Overwhelmingly, the story is finally one of joy.
I would recommend to those that operate the museum that tourists pay more for this experience or have a donation box, some audio options or pamphlet with different languages would also be great. It was a little hard to read English as it was so low down.
We are so glad we went and highly recommend.

This was our favourite museum in Dili as we felt it was the most informative. Entry is only $1 per person and the staff on reception are very approachable. There is plenty of information on Timor’s haunted history and the struggles the people have faced, and some of the exhibitions on show (weapons, clothing etc) is very eerie. Information provided is in multiple languages including English, and it is very insightful. There is also a theatre room where we watched the 5-10 min video which included the Santa Cruz massacre, which was heartbreaking. All in all, definitely worth a visit here on your trip to Dili.

The artifacts are very interesting, but the English explanations are at toddler height and in small font o you must squat to read them which get tiring. Also the building has three floors but the restaurant/gift shop flor (second) has not been completed and third floor just a shell basically.
The no photo policy is unclear on the concept: they want the World to know what happened and allowing sharing of photos would help spread the word.

I greatly enjoyed visiting this fascinating museum. Guests can learn so much about the history of Timor L'Este, especially about its amazing (and thank God, successful) struggles for independence.

This is a truly wonderful museum offering visitors a unique opportunity to learn about the rich history of Timor L'Este and specifically about the heroic efforts of Timorese to resist colonial rule and to achieve independence for this beautiful nation.
A small suggestion to the museum directors -- instead of banning all photography inside the museum, why not simply ask visitors to refrain from using flash photography? I would have loved to share photos of your beautiful museum with friends and family. Thank you.

This was a great museum. It was well set out and displays were in multiple languages. It told the story of Timor-Leste as a timeline. It was fascinating, I learned a lot.
It was a shame they didn't have any English books on sale, as I would have liked to read more.
It was interesting enough for the kids to stay focused long enough for us to get round most of it in detail.

I spent a few hours at this very impressive museum. It is brimming with information laid out clearly and chronologically. Entrance fee is $1 and it is cool and comfortable inside.

A "must see", if you visit Dili, Timor-Leste (East Timor), to understand the "fight for freedom", the sacrifices made by a generation past and some who are still alive today to secure an Independent Timor-Leste.

Hi Glenys, we hired a driver when we arrived who took us there and up to the Christ Redeemer, can't remember how much but wasn't much and way too hot to walk anywhere.

From the Airport to the city center it is too far to walk unless you are very fit. Within the city center you can walk to the parliament and the museum but bring water, it is hot.. The statue of Christ is a 15 minutes taxi ride from from the city center, and it is advisable to ask the driver to wait why you climb the 800 stairs because there is hardly any taxis availbale out there.

The Museum is only 2 or 3 blocks from the Port (as opposed to the airport which is a lot further). Easy walking distance.
