The revolutionary history of modern communist China has always intrigued me. I have great respects and admirations for those vanguards and pioneers who selflessly sacrificed their precious lives for the revolutionary cause. Many of them could have chosen a much more peaceful and comfortable life style but instead they identified themselves with the plight of the common masses and suffered the risk of being beheaded and assassinated by their political opponents. The spectacular bravery acts of the 8th Route Army vanguards are greatly commendable especially in their war against the Japanese Imperialists.
I was in Xian for 5 days, stayed in the 7 Sages Hostel but did not realize that the hostel compound was part of the Xian Maryland Office of the Eighth Route Army until I visited the Memorial Hall.
The Memorial Hall is a great museum with many galleries. There is a dungeon right near to the entrance. I climbed down the stairs to visit. It was a secret den probably used by the Red Army military commanders to discuss their strategic plans of attack against the Japanese. The photos of Marx, Engels, Lenin and Stalin were visibly displayed on the wall of the room above the dungeon and decorated colorfully with flags of all the allied countries involved in an united front battle against Japan and Germany during the Second World War.
In another room was the photo of Dr Sun Yat Sen, the founder of the Republic of China. He was well-respected by both the Kuomintang and the Communists. Right in the inner court yard was a red wooden stand with a pledge specifically for the new communist cadre to pledge their allegiance to the Communist Party. I noticed a group of youths carrying a red banner of the Communist Party subsequently lined up in front of the red wooden stand taking their pledge of allegiance. Their loud synchronized voice showed the passion and enthusiasm they have for the party.
I also visited the room once used by Internationalist doctor Norman Bethune, a foreign doctor who forsake his luxury life in his country and came to China to provide medical support to the Chinese communists in the frontline fighting the war. His spirit of internationalism was well respected by the Chinese people. There is also a gallery that talked about the life of the great US journalist, Helen Foster Snow who reported and wrote favorable articles about the Chinese communists amidst criticism of her open support of communism. Another platform was a display of the passionate youths who persevered through long distance travel to Yan'an to join the military contingent in the protracted battle against the Japanese invaders.
It took me almost 3 hours to walk around the whole museum. I am impressed by the way the artifacts were preserved. I was surprised to see a barber seat used during those times for haircutting. I also observed that all the room setting of the famous leaders including the internationalist doctor Norman Bethune were so simple. There was not a luxurious item in the room that they could enjoy.
The revolutionary leaders of those times carried a mission to `liberate' China against oppression and aggression. They were humble and genuinely willing to sacrifice for a noble cause and they won the respect of the masses.
I had the chance to speak to a number of the current generation of Chinese youths while at the 7 Sages hostel and they harbored great respect for these vanguards. What they hate to see was the corruption that crept into the lives of the many current government officials that tarnished the reputation of the once great Communist Party. Chinese President Xi Jinping vowed to stem this disease of corruption that weakened the party leadership and they said that they have great admiration for him (President Xi).
Will he bring back the glory that once crowned those vanguards of the revolutionary movement?
