I was here six months ago. But I live only two hours away, in Tucson. The tour guide had said I could come back and take my time, so I did. I looked slowly at about ten cars in detail, taking photos as I went. I left (see below about staying here) even more amazed at the artistry than I was before.
I'm including photos of the Volkswagen "bug" with the California license plate OHMYGAWD. (All the cars are street legal -- and some have hilarious custom license plates. My tour guide told a story of being pulled over by a police officer who said "you have multiple violations." He proceeded to tell the officer a list of reasons the car was legal. The officer let him go. :)
I had plenty of time because I'd found out Art Car World also rents rooms upstairs! They share a nice kitchen, TV/lounge, washer/dryer, bathrooms with showers and one huge bathtub... you can walk downstairs to the museum. I used the contact form on their website to inquire.

Visiting this museum is totally delightful. We were amazed at the number of art cars on display even though the museum is not finished. The cars are creatively decorated —many of their creators took years to complete the project. Our guide Hunter was very knowledgeable about each creator's background, had specific information about their creations, and where the cars had toured — some of them have been shipped to Europe and the Middle East for display.
Be sure to go to the museum’s website to check when it’s open, and to make an appointment. It’s worth the effort, especially If you like something quirky and offbeat.

This was super cool and well worth the stop and a donation. The tour is free but after having an awesome 1:1 tour for an hour and a half you'll want to give some money to contribute. Sasha was my guide and he was very informative and did an excellent job telling me the history of the owner and the back stories behind each and every car.
I'm so glad I discovered this unknown gem!

What would you do if you saw a car that looks like a whale with wheels? How about a van covered with hundreds of cameras? Or you're not near a church but there's a Volkswagen bug perfectly wrapped in stained glass? You can visit Art Car World to see 18 vehicles like those. They're all street legal; they've been driven and shown around the world, on PBS and National Geographic, and a lot more that I've forgotten. (My guide said that they're aiming to add many more cars.)
This nonprofit museum has been coming together for years. They're hoping to finish remodeling and open sometime later in 2023. In the meantime, they're open for (only) tours 11am to 7pm Friday through Sunday. My tour guide was very very knowledgeable about the cars, but he was glad to tell me as much or as little as I wanted... I could also just look. I spent more than two hours, and I felt like I'd barely started. The cars are each so individual, so different from each other, and so rich in detail. Some of the cars were built by artists, but others by people with no artistic background. The creativity and attention to detail are amazing.
I wish that TripAdvisor weren't organized by city. This museum is absolutely worth a trip -- from I-10 (between 60 and 80 minutes, depending where you start), Tucson (just over two hours), or wherever. I've done a lot of traveling worldwide, and I've never seen anything like it.
