Carnegie art museum is outstanding. Go up the stairs and I was immediately facing a classic large Chase and the largest Prendergast I've ever seen (like by 10x)! Wow. The gallery rooms are long and filled with wonderful art. Some highlights included an Albert Moore painting (these are rare in the US), two massive Burne-Jones, an incendiary Edward Austin Abbey and a whole room dedicated to the aesthetic movement.

An intimate Bonnard and a Degas bath are in the same room. German art is lightly represented by Paul Modersohn-Becker and Kirchner. Valadon, Cassatt, Matisse and Redon each are here. An artist I was unfamiliar with but loved was John Batten. His "Garden of Adonis" is spectacular!

My only two complaints: parking charged me twice and I'm still working with my credit card company to get my money back. And they had so few postcards of their collection in the gift shop. I would have bought many.

Was very excited to visit the Japanese prints exhibition and was not disappointed. The museum is massive, so I barely had time to walk through one level in addition to seeing the aforementioned temporary exhibition. Would definitely recommend visiting multiple times and going through the museum in chunks if you have the chance.
When purchasing a ticket to the art museum, you also receive access to the natural history museum located in the same building. Didn't have time to visit the natural history side at all. Neat museum stores, too.
It was a little dirty, especially on the stairs going up to the Scaife galleries (lots of dust and dirt laying around). Staff member who sold me the ticket at the natural history side entrance was being quite rude but other staff was very friendly and helpful.

This used to be a Worth-a-Detour destination. No longer. Knowing from their web-site the range and depth of their permanent collection, the very limited showing of art before 1800 on display was abysmal – a mere dozen or so works and only one piece of pre-1800 decorative art in a completely different gallery to compliment them. It would have made sense if the choice of works had been in any way related to some sort of theme or even themes, but no, the curatorial choice was completely random and disconnected, shamefully so as if the curator didn’t know a thing about art history and cared less.

A glance through the collection shows that, for instance, a theme of still-life, or even more focused fruit still-life, would have brought out a wide and interesting range of works, starting with a distinguished Melendez….or the influence of British portraiture on America in the 19thC, which could have killed several birds with a very few stones, but no. Instead, we were treated to a very dismal Romney full-length whose only merit was that it was big.

A sculpture hall, with no sculpture. Now there is a novel idea! Bar the gaggle of Japanese school-girls making Tik-Toc videos, this vast space was empty of both works of art and a reason. Their collection – distinguished on the web-site - was distinguished by its absence in the galleries, while facile and space-consuming modern ‘art’ took precedence.

If you are going to charge Met NY prices to get in, then punters will expect Met NY exhibits. Nothing to see here, so move along, please.

Simply stunning! There is something magical about the peacefulness of strolling a museum. We were pleasantly surprised to learn that we had access to this museum along with our purchase of the natural history museum. After checking out the natural history side, we ventured to the art museum (the museums are connected) STUNNING building with grand halls, beautiful stone work & works of art! We loved walking around & seeing all the art. Beautiful lay out & easy to navigate there is a LOT to see here. Nice mix of famous pieces, modern & creative artists.

We were in Pittsburgh for the weekend and needed to fill a few hours before meeting up with our group. We decided to visit the Carnegie Art Museum. It was a beautiful collection! There were works from all time periods and they had a nice variety of hung pieces, sculptures, and other types of exhibits. It was nice to see the Monets and Van Goghs in person! There are many rooms with different themes. We got turned around a couple times, but there are many docents on hand to assist. They are also very knowledgeable and answered all our questions!

The art collection here is well worth viewing. While not a comprehensive collection of any specific period the collection includes outstanding examples, primarily paintings with some sculptures, ranging from early western European art to contemporary art. The galleries are spacious and attractive and numerous staff are available to discuss/answer questions.
Begin or end your visit with a cup of the delicious coffee or treats served in the cafe at the entrance.

The museum is the old kind of museum with large spaces and not enough to fill them. The art and natural history exhibits are confusing to navigate and the place needs more directional signs. Even using the map, we had to stop several times and ask employees how to get somewhere. I was very disappointed in the numerous “dead animals” in glass exhibits. Those are old style and boring. The museum needs more hands on things for kids (and adults, too). Somebody on staff needs to tour the Royal Ontario Museum inToronto (and, no, I’m not Canadian) to see an excellent museum. The modern art exhibit seemed sparse for the amount of space it was allotted but the Old Masters were nicely displayed. The gift shops and the Cafe are excellent.

This is an extensive and well curated museum. The permanent collection is varied and quite strong, and the exhibitions are quite good too.

I really enjoyed my visit to this art museum. There is a wide variety of art from various time periods and styles, with many familiar artists represented. Of course, there were many new and unfamiliar art and artists as well, which I enjoyed learning about. It is a large museum, but not so large that you’d an’t get through it in a visit. The variety kept my interest.
