Finally visited the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium after moving here 4 years ago, visited on New Year's Eve with 4 other adult family members. I knew it was a smaller zoo, so I didn't have super high expectations, but the condition of the zoo was disheartening,

It is very old, run down, outdated looking and a lot of the animal habitats are quite small. Several of the large cat habitats contained animals that paced back and forth nonstop, in a very repetitive way. They are obviously very stressed. The elephants looked underweight. Some of the viewing glass was so dirty you had a hard time seeing the animals.

In the animal exhibit areas, we only saw 2 workers... in the entire zoo. Out walking the (sometimes steep uphill) paths we encountered no zoo workers at all. There are few places to sit and rest along the way and one of the old wooden benches looked unsafe to sit on. This probably isn't a very handicap friendly place to visit.

The workers we did encounter were very nice and seemed eager to leave a positive impression.

I was left with the feeling that, perhaps, this zoo is in dire financial straits and is doing the best they can with what they have. I realize with the current high COVID spike and it being a holiday that the zoo may have been temporarily understaffed... I hope that was the case. Otherwise, the employees of this zoo are probably extremely overworked.

I hope this zoo can find a way to add funds so they can improve and update their facilities and most importantly, make their animals happier. One suggestion may be to start charging for parking? We fully expected to pay for parking and were surprised to find there wasn't any. Also come up with a zoo "star", an animal you can promote to generate buzz and interest and maybe even monthly support for website viewing or some such.

Anyway, if you have little kids, they aren't going to notice any of this and the price of admission is very low... with all this being said, I'd still recommend a visit if for nothing else, to support the animals of this venerable zoo.

Mid-winter visits to the zoo can be a mixed bag, but we enjoyed this first visit to this zoo. The big cats — except the lions — were all up and active in the cool weather. The primate house was interesting, but the aquarium was an excellent spot to warm up halfway through our visit. Despite some animal exhibits being closed, there was plenty to see and do to just to justify the expense and fill 3-4 hours on a cold Sunday afternoon.

An awesome place. Great variety of animals and fish. Loved the elephants, rhinos, and giraffes. The leopard looked like it was stalking prey. Tropical fish were beautiful, as were the seahorses. The polar bear looked particularly sad tho', like it needed company. All in all highly recommended.

Nice zoo but it has a few problems for older or handicapped patrons.
First, the zoo is built as a circle. If you want to skip a exhibit, except the fish house, you can't. You have to pass all the exhibits to get out. No quick exit if you tire or have a health issue.
Second, there are too few places to sit in the back half of the circuit especially since the back half starts with a long uphill climb.
Third, the handicapped parking area is so full of large and deep potholes I stopped in the drive lane to unload my sister-in-laws scooter and let her out. The handicapped parking area is dangerous to walk in.
On the plus side the zoo was clean, well decorated and provided a good variety of animals for it's size. Except for bears. We visited at opening time on Sept. 17th and there was not 1 bear on exhibit. Odd for a zoo that assaults' you with a swimming polar bear on every piece of promotional material they post or print.

We decided to go to the zoo wasn’t expecting much but it’s really a nice zoo and aquarium I think the prices were reasonable to get in not too crowded so that was nice I would visit again if I’m ever in Pittsburgh.

A good variety of animals. Some of the exhibits were a bit small and or unkempt. It was nice to see Komodo dragons and fassas. Lions were actually frolicking about as were the gorillas. Very spread out as are most zoos. The small aquarium was something that most zoos don't have. Overall it was nice.

Nice well kept zoo and aquarium. Kids will absolutely love going here. The only draw back is it is hilly. Definitely could make a day trip out of it. Would go again.

It was a more than hot, sticky, humid day out when I visited this zoo and yet, I still enjoyed it! Due to my limited time in Pittsburgh and late arrival to the zoo, we didn’t get to see everything but almost! Of course it wasn’t the best day to visit because of the heat and the animals go into hiding and indoors, but rain was in the forecast, so it was the best day to visit.

We spent a little over 2 hours walking around and visiting with the animals. We probably would have been able to see more if it wasn’t for us taking so many photos and videos of everything! Let’s not forget the photo booths in various areas of the park which are always so much fun!

What I liked about it was that it was so open! You didn’t have cages blocking your view for most of the animals. We started our journey with the Canadian Lynx which were basically laying around and the Amur Tiger which weren’t very active. One of them did go into the water to cool off as you can see in the photo. It was the best I could do to get the photo. The Amur Tigers are found in birch forests of Eastern Russia and small pockets in the border area of China and North Korea. They are solitary animals and usually have 2 to 6 Cubs in a litter. Males can weigh up to 600 lbs and females up to 300 lbs.

We then moved onto the Flamingos! Such beauties! Then we met the alligator that was sleeping but honestly I think he’s dead or fake! I am probably wrong but it did not move, blink, look or anything from the time I first saw it to the the time I left! We also saw a rhinoceros. Black Rhinos are from Eastern and Southern Africa. An average rhino is 5 feet tall and weighs between 2,000 and 3,000 lbs.

We then found a rock and us girls had to group together and take a photo of course!

We heard a lot of noise and we figured it was it coming from the lion! We finally came across him! Boy was he telling us a story! The African Lion, Panthera Leo, can leap up to 36 feet! He was roaring in protection of his territory from intruders!

The Ostrich were roaming around. The Elephants were beautiful! They were enjoying the weather, that’s for sure.

Some of the animals gave us quite a show! Dripping with sweat we carried on and enjoyed the rest of the animals! We knew the Aquarium was going to be coming up soon and that should be air conditioned.

The Visayan Warty Pigs were so adorable! The Clouded Leopard was briefly outside before going indoors due to the heat, probably.

Several places along the way they had these beautiful butterfly benches! Total photo op!

There were several beautiful flowers and waterfalls throughout the park!

The views from some areas of the park were gorgeous!

While we were heading to the exit area, we came across a beautiful Peacock just walking around! I think it may have been just as thirsty as I was, as it looked like it was trying to break into the soda fridge.

The seals were in the coolest place in the park besides the fish in the aquarium.

All in all, it was a great time at the zoo! We all needed a shower badly but it was fun, exciting and interesting! We didn’t get to see all the animals due to our late arrival but we saw more than a third of them.

Would definitely return and recommend to all to check it out! Zoos are just so much fun!

Not as large as some of the zoos I've been too, but the animals are easy to view (when they aren't off-exhibit--there were a lot of those). The aquarium has lots and lots of tanks and the new exhibit for the marine mammals was really nice.
I do wish that the zoo had had more signage. They were not giving out paper maps (due to COVID?) and we could not get the map app to work right. While the zoo is mostly one big loop, there is one section that we nearly missed entirely. Jambo Grill is about the only place to sit down and eat in the zoo (unless your bring a picnic) and their mobile app was not working when we were there. We waited for AGES and went to the window multiple times before someone told us that the printer was down and had not printed our order.

Many things of comment on. The lack of signage in the park is most notable. This wouldn’t be a problem if there were sufficient staff on site to consult with (we spent a sunny Thursday there). Most of the animal exhibits were disappointing. The tiger exhibit seemed too small for the animal there. The lack of things for sentient animals like elephants to use is disturbing. Likewise with the gorilla enclosure. One can walk for hundreds of yards and see nothing. The zoo needs to be modernized and less money spent on wire form displays. The aquarium was less inviting as the tanks were poorly lit and the water inside dirty.
