I was lucky enough to spend 12 days on the island and completed 12 dives in that time. July can be a windy month there, so to get the most rewarding experience, I would recommend trying the same. Our best dives were on the west side of the island, which requires good conditions, so if that opportunity comes up, I would highly recommend it. In saying that, Atauro is by far the most beautiful place I have had the pleasure to dive, so even if you don't make it to the west side, you won't be disappointed.
I completed my Advanced Diving Course and Specialist Deep Diving course with Patrik. From arrival, Patriks' warmth, friendliness, and passion for diving were infectious. He is an extremely professional, knowledgeable, and thorough diver whom I feel very privileged to have learnt from as I am now a far better and more confident diver from his teachings. He taught me more than the course requirements (a lot of instructors don't from past experience) and always made it fun. I could not recommend him as an instructor any higher. He also throws a very fun music quiz at Ponkies if there are enough people around, so make sure you ask about that.
Thank you so much to Patrik and the rest of the team at Compass for an unforgettable experience.

I have just returned from a fabulous four night stay at the Compass Diving Resort on Atauro Island.
We had a clean, comfortable villa with a well-appointed en suite.
The dive instructors Poppy and Patrik were very professional and skilful, as well as being charming company. I enjoyed two discovery dives with Poppy and a snorkeling session, my enjoyment of each enhanced by her considerable knowledge and experience. The dive locations were easy to get to and the marine life was extraordinary. Excellent boat crew. Even in quite windy conditions (seasonal) we were always confident that we were in capable hands.
The food was delightful and plentiful.
Thank you all for a memorable holiday at a fantastic location.

My partner and I stayed at the Timor Hotel in Dili to complete the pool skills. The pool wasn't open so we used the pool next to the Compass office. There was accommodation there which may have been a good option as it is opposite the beach - a better location than Timor Hotel which is in the business district (depends on what you like - we would have been ok staying in basic rooms & going to a restaurant nearby and not an having onsite restaurant etc).
Our instructor Patrik Enlund met us with his big smile and was fantastic for the duration of our stay on Atauro! We probably were a bit challenging as we were new divers around 60 yrs old but Patrik showed great skill & patience. He was empathetic when I felt anxious breathing with the regulator and distracted me by making bubble patterns which calmed me down. By the end of our stay we felt confident. I got to do an extra fun dive. My partner had an ear infection so couldn't come. I would recommend taking ear spirits for drying ears out and antibiotics just in case. The water temp was 28 or 29 degrees.
Atauro is an underwater wonderland! The reefs are so diverse and healthy with an abundance of fish - incredibly beautiful.
We had 4 nights in the standard room which was very comfortable and had a hammock on the verandah. (We did loose water in the room on the last day - it is a 3rd world country though - we used the toiled block nearby on the last morning).
Melissa the General Manager was very accommodating and professional. The other staff, Poppy and Celina were also friendly and very professional.
The food was exceptional - cooked by locals who were lovely. A buffet - 3 meals a day with an impressive range offered. The hut dining area is pretty basic but right on the waters edge. There's another hut with hammocks were you can relax & listen to the water.
The boat staff were also locals - great to see Compass supporting them. They were very attentive and helped me get me in an out of the boat with the heavy gear.
Patrik was passionate about cleaning up the plastic rubbish on the beach. He is so enthusiastic and had tourists and locals working together. We met Barry from Barry's Place who is hoping to re-purpose melted bottle tops and teach the locals how to make items such as cups, coasters, rulers and gecko fridge magnets. We were impressed at Patriks dedication - I hope the island will sort out a way to dispose of the rubbish.
A tuk-tuk visit to the Women's Co-op is well worth while. They are sewing on pedal sewing machines. A visit to Ponkies bar is also worthwhile to see a lovely view.
On the way back to the mainland we were fortunate to see a school of hundreds of dolphins. We couldn't believe how many there were! We also saw a pigmy blue whale breach. Celina and the boat crew allowed us time to enjoy the spectacle - not hurrying at all.
We would recommend Compass diving - thanks to all of the staff for making our holiday very memorable.

We've dived at some great places around the world, including Fiji, Hawaii, Malaysia and Australia's Great Barrier Reef. However, we've never experienced anything like the soft coral wonderland at Atauro Island! Pristine reefs. What a magical experience.
We spent 6 days diving with the friendly team at Compass Diving, Atauro, and we enjoyed the experience so much, we extended our stay for another 2 days.
Thank you Compass Diving for introducing us to this wonderful part of the world.

Compass were very professional. They picked me up from Dili and put me up in very good accommodation right on the water front on Atauro island. The deal included all meals and the food was varied and enjoyable. I did a review dive as I hadn’t dived for quite a while and Selina was a great instructor. The second dive was excellent. I would highly recommend them.

The island of Atauro is an unmissable place on a visit to Timor.
Our option was to take the public boat (Dragon boat that leaves Dili and returns on Thursdays and Saturdays and each trip costs 12 dollars) to the island and return on the accommodation's private boat (70 dollars) per person, staying only 1 night on the island.
I think it's the ideal time for anyone who wants to get a view of the island, as long as you rent a motorbike to get around.
In the development we opted for a cabin with AC and toilet. Meals are included and a 1-hour snorkelling session is also included. The cabin was pleasant, with hot water available for bathing, the snorkelling session in the corals was very good and the food offered was excellent in quality and quantity.
5-star service throughout your stay.
The negative point is the amount of rubbish in front of the hotel, next to the sea. If it is permissible a few meters from the hotel, it is unforgivable even in the hotel area. I think that removing the rubbish would take about 20 minutes a day and would give an image of the place.

My family stayed at Compass for 2 nights in early January, we booked last minute and it was a close call between this or Atauro Dive lodge but the temptation of the "Delux Villa" with en-suite bathroom won us over. We also opted to take the compass boat transfer at the astronomical fee of $130 each.
We were collected at our hotel in Dili and arrived to the boat where we taken aback by a pretty cold and miserable greeting by a Compass employee whose tactless, unapologetic, first question was abruptly asking for the balance of the money we owed before we would go anywhere, zero courtesy or trust shown. This kind of set the tone for the next few days as it happens.
Arriving at the island we were taken on the short bus ride to the resort, where my immediate impression was the resort felt tatty and unkempt. This was further confirmed when entering our villa that didn't represent the images or description.
Sheets on one of the beds were dirty too.
Anyway, we were happy to crack on and except these things, we travel a lot, it's the way it sometimes is and after all we were on a small remote island. However over the next 60 hours, more and more examples of a total lack of love and care and any attempt to make us enjoy ourselves or feel welcome is what ultimately has prompted me to write this truly honest review.
So, here are few other things...
The resort has has a nice Palapa area with 4 hammocks but annoyingly these were often occupied by staff members so there was no area to sit outside other than a cobbled together bench without shade or on a towel on the dirt/grass
compass is on the rocky part of thr beach so to get out to the reef you have to get on their bus to the village, then get onto a small boat and then precariously transfer to the dive boat out at sea, it's fine but a bit of a palava. Other resorts access their dive boats directly from their beach.
I didn't see anyone cleaning at any point during my stay, we paid over $200 per night for our room and no one even mopped the bathroom or anything.
Very sad to report also that a few personal items went missing, including a dive computer and sunglasses, we were the only guests staying.
I could carry on but i'll leave it there on the bad stuff...
On the up side
The food was excellent.
The diving was excellent
Kib the dive master was excellent
For the record I make a TV show that focuses on private owned weird and wonderful hotels and I have to say Compass Diving is the least loved and cared for hotel that I have ever visited. In my opinion this can only stem from the top and the owner needs to make a lot of changes to make this place remotely acceptable, he should start by reducing the price whilst its in this state.
On the last morning I took a walk down the beach to the village and passed the Autoro Dive resort, I was struck with envy at its charming huts, well looked after gardens, nice shaded sitting out area, it even had some comfy loungers. Another guest who left Compass before us and moved to Barrys place said that was great too.

What an amazing time with our tour in Timor Leste and Compass Diving. Our guides were very helpful and knowledgeable. Kib was always making us laugh with his hilarious jokes! This part of the world is rustic, so the air conditioning was on mainly at night. Which it did work wonderfully then! The ocean and the area make up for any inconvenience. I recommend this company for people who want to see some of the most beautiful reefs, possibility of seeing and swimming with whales and being off the grid for a bit!

This is a great dive resort! Loved our guide Kib! He was so funny and accommodating! This is a very rustic place and you need to realize this is not a 5 star dive hotel. The AC in the villas runs mainly from 9pm-9am, but in fairness Atauro Island is basically off the grid. The people here are friendly and the reefs are absolutely the best in the world. I highly recommend this dive resort, for people wanting a remote dive experience in a very rustic location!

Went to the west side of the Atauto Island & explored doro reef & illiana reef. It was breath taking. None of the corals were destroyed by human activities. It is as though the west was protected from aggressive fishing methods. It is still in it's pristine condition. On the east side, eventhough it's reefs has taken beatings from irresponsible fishermen in the past from both indonesians & timorese, it has continued to heal as the healthy corals outnumber the dead ones. Compass diving instructors are awesome people who do not leave you out clueless about Atauro island reefs' history. They are great people who provides great accomodation including arranging strict dietry requirements if you need. Awesome diver instructors, guides, equipments & dive sites. Carmen, Akkaari, Kibb were awesome dive instructors & guides. Udaa was an awesome dive buddy. They treat me like a family member. I stayed there for 3 weeks straight from september 2023 till october 2023. I missed diving in Atauro island crystal clear blue water which visibility reaches 30 meters & more in the early afternoon. It's crazy beautiful.
