The tour itself was really good! It was super interesting and the guide was a wealth of information. I agree with others that you must try to get to the front if you're in a big group because you wont be able to hear, we had no trouble with this at all.
There are many rules on the website and they're there for a reason. However, in regards to mobile phones, people did not adhere to the rule.
The rest of the site was definitely a work in progress but for the price we paid, the tour was more than sufficient.

Not sure when you visited? We purposely keep our groups to under 34 for the main mine tour and 25 for the Deep Mine Tour so that everyone can hear and keep up with the guide. Opportunity to have a chat with the guide or another of our team at the end of the tour ensures that everyone can pick up on any missed aspects. The health & safety rule about mobile phones & other devices is strictly applied at all times and all such devices are not allowed in the mine. It is dangerous to use such devices in the mine far more so than it is when walking or driving a car. Any person who breaks the rule will be challenged and the device confiscated for the safety of all.

We went on the deep mine tour with Kevin. We both had a wonderful experience and Kevin is a good quide As others have said it is rather crowded with a maximum of 25 people on this tour and as a result we could not hear everything that Kevin said. We were prepared for this having ready the reviews on here but when stopping it can be rather crowded in a limited space. So if you come be prepared for this. It's a wonderful experience though and certainly the best mine tour I have been on.

Hello and thanks for telling us that this was the best mine tour you have been on. That is something we often hear which is encouraging. We purposely restrict numbers to 25 persons on the Deep Mine Tour due to the character of the mine and to maintain its special atmosphere. In a 300 year old tin mine such as this one, there are only a few level spaces to gather except on the flights of stairs in the main shaft & in the wide Holman chamber where we always stop to allow everyone the opportunity to hear the guide & to ask any questions they may have about the mine. We take advantage to gather in the various places where all can easily & safely congregate to hear and see as much as is possible. At the end of the Deep Mine Tour, on reaching the surface, the visitors often gather with the guide to have a more informal chat, there is usually no limit on this time in our equally historic gardens where tin working started in the 13th century and continued to be used as tin dressing floors until the 1870s. We dont have many names but we do know that a little girl called Fanny Moyle worked here in at the tin stamps in the gardens as a Frame Girl from the late 1860s to the early 1870s. In 1871 the census records that she was just 14 years of age. Her widowed 36 year old mother was the Wendron Consols Counthouse keeper and her aunt Sarah worked here too. The water powered tin stamps, dressing floors & the three mines were all under the same control & ownership from 1854. The annual Wendron Consols Mine festival was held here, there is an 1869 press report of the colourful event. Our guides will always be pleased to explain again if anyone has not heard or understood any part of the 90 minute tour and we encourage everyone to keep together when underground. Our system generally works well. If there are any other questions the museum or ticket office staff will be delighted to chat with anyone who enquires.

Great review - many thanks indeed. We are delighted to hear how much you gleaned from your visit to this historic place. The engine event was our very first and will be repeated next year with even more engines being exhibited. We trust you heard our "resident" brass band and the fair organ owned by our good friends Pal & Natasha Bates who regularly bring their instrument to the gardens. We hope to be able to welcome you here again next summer.

The Tour was very thorough, clear and informative - this young lady knew her stuff! Went quite a way down into the mine and really got an idea of how the mining was done and the history of the people at that time - we definitely have it easy these days!

Very many thanks for coming to see us - we are pleased to know how much you learned about the hard life of the Cornish tin miners during the 18th century. Your guide was Hannah and she is very popular with our visitors. Do come and take our FIVE STAR Deep Mine Adventure Tour next time you are down in Cornwall.

Being in Cornwall for a few days I wanted to do a unique tour which allows you to feel the famous mining past. We've visiting another popular mine in cornwall but that felt more like a tourist attraction.

I couldn't do too much research on this tour on the internet but thought it looked good and worth a try.

Yes it's not cheap and yes it's a bit rustic but I found it fascinating, the young lady tour guide was so informed and did a truly amazing job at narrating what we was seeing. It really was a vivid and slightly moving experience and I truly feel for the poor souls who worked this mine.

I think it's fair to say this was one of the highlights of our Cornish trip and so pleased we did it, I kinda wish I spotted this last time. I do think I want to come back and see again.

In some sense I really wish I can take my camera down but fully understand why not but it's well worth the cost and is a must to do.

(seeing the bats too was a added pleasure).

It seems that the museum was being revampted slightly but we still had an informative walk around this too and it seems that some outbuildings are being reworked so certainly so look forward to seeing them in action next time (That other older building in the car park section looks brilliant too I hope you can get that converted).

Will be back, promise.

(Top marks to our tour guide too).

Thanks for your FIVE STAR review - such reviews give our team of staff and volunteers great encouragement. We look forward to welcoming you next time. Its gratifying to know how much you enjoyed your exploration of the various levels of the mine and that your trip underground was one of the highlights of your holiday. We know that the mine tours have a profound & memorable effect on nearly all of our visitors and we very much steer away from being a "tourist attraction" which is a term we do not use - we are as you confirm an historic place - we set out to offer an educational visit into the genuine workings of an mine created during the 1700s - no frills or gimmicks here and we are proud to be the only complete & real tin mine that can be explored in Cornwall today. We aim to be rustic as you mention, we refer to this appearance as "Mineshackle" as all Cornish tin and copper mines were ramshackle affairs - we set out to restore buildings as close as we can to the way the mines were presented in the olden days. However our woodland valley gardens are where once many people worked on tin dressing breaking rocks and so on, so it was a very messy and noisy place for around 700 years when the water powered tin stamps were banging away - at one time there were no less than four water wheels and 24 heads of stamps. This use dates back to the 13th century when the waterways were created at the end of the 1200s - the very first recorded place where water wheels were put to such a use. The noise would have been deafening and heard all around the valley and village. We are working on the old mill building and hope to commence work in earnest by February or March 2020. The museum work is a very slow process whilst we are open to the public - this winter we hope to make much more progress as we are closed from the 2nd of November until April 2020 - apart from charter visits and the regular Camborne School of Mines field study days which are held here over the winter months, this will be their fourth winter bringing many students to carry out surveying and geology studies. We look forward to meeting you next summer.

The inside mine tour was packed 33 people was way to many on one tour you felt you needed to cram into a small space try and listen as people crunched gravel below their feet then quickly move on so others could see what the guide had been talking about. No surface features to really take in. 1 building open as a chapel but nothing else worth really looking at or doing whilst waiting for a tour.
Cafe not open not even for cold drinks and crisps which everyone fancies after a tour out of season (yes they class the beginning of september out of season) the museum is all over the place with stuff in there totally irrelevant to the mine. Not much info given on the mine signage etc would be fab but not much going on. Oh and little kids under 4 not allowed own the mine.

What nonsense - there are many wonderful mining related things to see here at this UNESCO World Heritage Mine & Museum and ALL of them are well worth looking at. Its offensive to the Cornish people who work and volunteer here to say otherwise. We all strive to keep this historic place running as an important part of Cornish Heritage and one of the oldest and most historic mining locations in the entire county. In the waiting area there is an overseas exhibition with many illustrated information boards some of which are in the chapel room which is part of the Methodist Connexion Collection - Methodism and Cornish mining are inexorably entwined with the heritage of Cornwall. John and Charles Wesley both preached in our village and at nearby Porkellis. John Wesley preached many times at Gwenapp Pit just 7 miles away. This is all part of Cornwall and its traditions and its special brand of Methodism. Many miners were preachers such as Billy Bray and Walter Langford [his hat is in a cabinet] , many were also fishermen and farm workers too. Last weekend we had a visit from two local preachers who continue that tradition, one was the great grandson of Walter Langford and of the Miner-Poet John Harris. Children under 4 are not allowed into the mine on the shorter Main Mine Tour of three levels for obvious health and safety reasons - it's evident to most people that a mine is not a suitable environment for little children or babies! We state this on our web pages, our facebook pages and on all of our publicity. On the Deep Mine Tour the minimum age is 10 - we cannot see what you are trying to gain by commenting on this issue? The objects in the Cornish Heritage Collection are nearly all directly related to Cornish metal & other mining and the Cornish way of life that surrounds the heritage of Cornish people who laboured above and below ground here for many centuries. It began in the early Bronze Age, around 2150 BC, and ended (at least temporarily) with the closure of South Crofty tin mine in Cornwall in 1998 just a few miles from this museum. Tin, and later copper, were the most commonly extracted metals. Tin was mined here but the other two connected mines had copper ore too. Just 1000 yards up the lane there was a Kaolin mine. Tin mining in Cornwall continued long after the mining of other metals had become unprofitable. In our grounds is the only Scheduled Ancient Monument in all Cornwall to Bronze Age Tin Working which has been carried on here for almost 4000 years! Its unique in the entire South West. The water mill here is the first place recorded in written history where water power was used to process tin and that was continuous here for almost 700 years until 1880 or so, the 3 Km aqueduct was built during the 13 century. There is a number of unique & iconic mining items in the well filled museum, there are over 30 large cabinets filled with all sorts of mining related items and artefacts, explosives, Davy & other lamps, drills, historic models, there is even a cabinet of curiosities for people interested in other things too. There are several miners wooden clog shoes and felt hats [all found in the 18th century workings] , together with sections of rag & chain pumps and our kibble bucket - all hundreds of years old. Its true that we are a little eclectic but the items on display are there for people to peruse and delve into. Many objects here are hands on and we have two of our six pipe organs on display - these two are both mining related instruments. One is from the fishing village of Flushing by Falmouth and the other from the nearby village of Treverva is a memorial to the boys and men, most of them miners, who lost their lives during the Great War, the latter instrument was built in Truro using Cornish tin and woods and paid for by the hard earned pennies of the miners and others who once worshipped at this sadly closed chapel. In addition all of the copper, pewter, tinned objects, glass, telephone & other communications items clearly demonstrate to all visitors what tin, bismuth, lead, silver, arsenic, copper and the many other metals once mined in Cornwall were and are used for today. Mobile phones, radios, television sets and computers all need tin and copper to function, the most important being: copper, nickel, silver, gold, platinum group metals, cobalt, lithium, lead, tin, zinc, rare earth metals, gallium, indium, iron, chromium, niobium, tantalum, titanium. Stained leaded glass uses tin and modern glass production also relies on floating on a bed of molten tin or lead. We even have a collection of irons - most people are blissfully unaware that the various types of cast iron are alloys which contains various metals including tin - in addition many a miners wife or daughter was in domestic service and would have used such irons. Our collection of pipe organs shows the further use of up to 60% tin in the inner pipes. Brass items contain copper and zinc and pewter is 92% tin. Kaolin is also mined in Cornwall to this day and this has been used in the paper and pottery & china industry for centuries. Serpentine and other stones were and are still quarried in Cornwall close to this mine. We have examples on display. During the 18th century, Cornwall was the mining centre of the world, famous for its base metal and tin production. Wendron is one of the very oldest mining districts. There are many boards about mining and its history in our inner and entrance hallways together with a vast geological collection with specimens from many parts of Cornwall, the UK and from around the world. Cornish Mining has world influences and if you had bothered to look at our international exhibition boards in the waiting area, the very large map shows the Cornish Mining Locations around the entire world as well as in the British Islands. Our cafe is closed for the entire season due to works in hand and we have a lovely local tea room just 800 yards away which is recommended on our web site - many of our visitors use this facility - but chilled drinks all in glass bottles or cans are ALWAYS available here along with ice creams, nuts, chocolate, crisps, snacks and wrapped cakes, fudge and other similar things. Had you followed our recommendation and booked in advance by telephone you would have been invited to take a picnic - not such fun in wet weather of course but we have four tables on the covered bandstand and these are well used. You arrived on a wet day when we are busy and you could have taken a later tour or perhaps booked a bespoke visit, on the Deep Mine Tour we have only 25 visitors but these options are naturally more costly. A sunny day means less visitors. We have to operate in a sustainable way otherwise with smaller numbers the price for the tour would have to be greatly increased as most people will understand. No other mine in Cornwall pumps water as we do. Our main costs are for pumping the mine to keep it operational and for continuously maintaining the equipment to do it. The electricity bill is close to £40,000 a year which is to lift some 20+ million gallons [90 million litres or more] each year as well as for our continuous forced ventilation - our maintenance bill for renewals and repairs is about £50,000 each year. Insurance and other operating costs are also very considerable. The maximum visitors we take on our shorter tour [the one you took] is 34 persons including smaller people and we have seats for 34 persons. We do not pack people in but we do keep numbers to this level to ensure as best as we can that all can hear and see the various features of the mine. Our guides stop in several places to gather people around to explain about the ancient tin mine workings. If you had made the guide aware that you had any difficulty in hearing or otherwise we would have ensured that we explained things to you personally, all you had to do was ask at the time - there is little we can do when you are no longer here! In a long passageway it's not easy to hear which is why we stop and have an induction room for FAQs and explanations. There is a massive Cornish beam engine from the Bunny Tin Mine and Greensplat China Clay Mine which was the very last to work commercially in Cornwall - it towers 40 or more feet over our gardens and the mine entrance .... perhaps you missed it? It's the dominant mining machine in the gardens, it was built in 1846 and is one of only a few such engines that remain in Cornwall. There is another that is at Levant Mine which you also visited. Our engine is only one of many historic machines and other mining objects in our gardens and grounds. A massive 1920s Bellis & Morcom high speed steam engine in the inner gardens was from Newton Abbot Power station but is identical to a great number of such engines used at many mine locations in Cornwall all made by the same company. The unique traversing mine shaft winder in its own shed is a pure Cornish machine and went to Paris in 1900 - it won a gold medal and that is in the museum too! Mines that extract metals are usually restricted - that is why we have a mine introduction or briefing room to allow visitors to handle mine materials and a tin ingot that dates from 1883. This is what another visitor had to say "Our guide was very special and I would encourage everyone to visit this amazing place."
