Got the best surprise when Steve Martin played at the intermission. But even without that, the story was interesting and entertaining. The singing and acting was excellent. Sets were simple and effective. Choreography was surprisingly graceful for a show with Blue Grass music.
Loved it!

This show is perhaps the best show I have ever seen. I've been involved in theatre and acting for over 30 years and this show a complete work. Writing? Great. Singing? Incredible. Acting? Riveting (which I can't always say about acting in musicals.) Lighting, set design, directing? Brilliant. I'm glad I saw it before the Tony Awards because I would be surprised if it didn't win several. If you are coming to NYC to see shows, this should be at the top of your list.

Lovely show and beautiful story told with exquisite blue grass music. Steve Martin wrote a great and simple story that will make you cry.

Absolutely wonderful play with a great musical score woven together with an uplifting story. The singing was tremendous as was the acting. They genuinely seemed to be fully immersed in the emotion of the play and the music. Judging by the audience reaction, we were not alone in our glowing review. Good for families or couples. Go see this play!

I've heard tell that this sentimental new period musical from comic raconteur Steve Martin and singer-songwriter Edie Brickell is already on the verge of closing, which would be a shame since it's a heartwarming cameo of a show. Sure, it lacks the pizzazz of most of its fellow Tony-nominated competition, but there are redeeming qualities like Martin's clever wit and the infectious bluegrass music penned by Martin and Brickell that keep this musical afloat for most of its running time. With surprisingly dark elements, it just may come across as too much of a neatly wrapped fable when all is said and done, but the journey there is full of infectious good spirit and even more importantly, good music.

The story starts in 1945 when a young soldier named Billy Cane comes back to his hometown in rural North Carolina and decides to become a writer like Faulkner or Fitzgerald. He heads to Asheville where he is determined to have Alice Murphy, the steely editor of a well-regarded literary journal, read his stories. She takes notice of his talent which leads to a flashback 22 years earlier when a young, vibrant but poor Alice fell in love with Jimmy Ray Dobbs, the wealthy son of the town's mayor. She becomes pregnant, and Jimmy Ray's father is hellbent on taking the baby away so that his son can live out the high ambitions he has for his son. This leads to a surprisingly cruel act that finds its way to a happy ending.

In her Broadway debut, Carmen Cusack manages to convey the younger and older versions of Alice with equal elan and sings with conviction, especially on her climactic solo, "At Long last". A.J. Shively as Billy and Hannah Elless as Margo, the girl he left behind, are charming with the latter delivering a shimmering solo with "Asheville". Paul Alexander Nolan makes a solid impression as the younger Jimmy Ray, less so as his character's older self. Providing welcome comic relief are Jeff Blumenkrantz and saucy Emily Padgett as Alice's support staff at the journal. Martin showed up unexpectedly at last Saturday evening's performance playing banjo with the onstage bluegrass band at the top of Act II.

I had the chance to see this Broadway musical after winning 4 orchestra tickets at a church fundraiser. My husband and I treated my daughter & husband. We were excited to see this show as it is co-written by Steve Martin, yes that Steve Martin. It is a love story that spans many years with flashbacks. The story flows well & the music is a little bit bluegrass with rock influence. We totally enjoyed the show. We purchased tickets for our son & fiancée to see this show several weeks later & they loved it too. It has since been nominated for several Tony awards.

If friends told you a Country or Blue-Grass musical would work as a Broadway show, you would probably send them to have their heads examined, BUT IN THE CASE OF BRIGHT STAR, THEY WOULD BE TELLING YOU THE TRUTH.

This play works both as a musical and as good theater.

If you are looking for a Broadway show that moves and that also moves you, this is a good choice.

"Bright Star" is a surprising and touching play that works both as a musical and as good theater, with a good story that challenges the audience with moral questions.

The music and story--composed by Steve Martin and Edie Brickel--are great, and the lead actress Carmen Cusack is terrific, a bright star in her own right, whose singing and acting leave no one unmoved.

Yes, and Steve Martin, the comedian, writer and actor, also throws in some great comic relief at various times, but this is not a comedy. It is a play that asks us to question our own priorities about career versus family and religious belief versus community status.

At some shows, Mr. Martin puts in a guest appearance playing his banjo for a few minutes with the stellar band. The direction of Walter Bobbie is tight and effective.

Final Verdict: If you are looking for a Broadway show that moves and that also moves you, this is a good choice.

I found this show to be one of those rare productions that has it all. Fabulous actors, a very strong and talented lead, a good story line that kept you interested, amazing music! I am a Tony Voter and felt this was the best musical offered this season!

Went with 3 friends. We sat on the main floor in the back with a short ceiling. There was a vent which didn't seem to be giving out any air whatsoever. It was stifling and humid outside. A man on the other side of the aisle passed out and they were trying to revive him in the aisle (the show did continue). I myself became so uncomfortable I had to leave to splash water on my face and I watched the show from the back of the theater till intermission.

The story is totally predictable. The songs are poorly written and 'A Man's Gotta Do what a Man's Gotta do' I thought if I heard it one more time I would scream. Apparently Steve Martin wrote the music and Edie Brickel did the lyrics. Repetitive and mostly pitiful lyrics. There are good voices and acting for poor material. Way too long, I was bored.

Oh, Steve Martin played his banjo for about 2 minutes after the intermission which somehow resulted in a standing ovation.

Tourists might like this but a long-time theater lover did not.
