Definitely has a great vibe especially at night.

We love this beach and it’s especially great for families with small children as it’s nice and sandy and shallow with clear water. The break wall protects it from the surf and waves so it’s very flat and calm. Our three small grandkids (including a 10 month old) loved being there every day during our holiday. The sunsets are amazing from here too!

Yes, Kuhio Beach does get crowded; and, there's traffic noise coming off of busy Kalakaua Avenue. (Though, space opens up around 4 pm-ish as beach goers start packing up). There's not much shade on the beach. For me, Kuhio Beach is a place from my childhood. It's sentimental to me. It was our family's go-to spot whenever we drove into Waikiki.
The sturdy concrete barrier offers a sheltered and cool lagoon to swim in. (High tide's a lot deeper and nicer). The waves and currents are pretty mellow, and there's life guards, too. Look west from the shore line to view the row of beachfront hotels. In the other direction is Diamond Head.
And, if you're up for it, you can try your luck at jumping off the concrete jetty into oncoming waves at the east end of Kuhio Beach. (I did it as a kid), but, watch the local kids do it if you wanna get your timing down, first. There's a sign that says "no jumping" though that rule has never been enforced.
Further east is a little snack stand (by Queen's Surf) that sells food and shave ice (snow cones).
•• Anywhere along Waikiki's shore front is a good place for a Hawaiian sunset.

Kuhio Beach is picturesque, convenient, safe and a delightful place to spend the day. Although, why stop there when you can stay for the sunset?
This spot is typically super calm and is great for little kids and/or those with limited swimming ability. This is in part due to rectangular rock wall jettys that box in swimming areas and protect you from the surf break. It also has lifeguards during daytime hours, rinsing stations and small restrooms. If you want a little more adventure, there are gaps in the jetty where you can bypass the swimming area on your surfboard or paddle board to get out to the breaks
On the downside, Kuhio can get very crowded and there is limited space in the sand to spread out. The water can also get super shallow during low tide to the point where you practically need to lay down to fully submerge and cool off. Lastly, it’s off of a busy Kalākaua Ave which makes it a bit noisy with folks blasting music and revving engines while driving back and forth.
Worth the stop here regardless!

The emotion triggered by the afterglow is a true blessing. My eyes will never and ever forget such a beautiful sunset at Kuhio Beach.

Beautiful sky, beautiful water! My daughter and I met people who were vacationing from all over the world! We had wonderful conversations with the other travelers, and we were truly in the most beautiful place in the world!

Last visit June 2018. My favorite Umbrella and Chair rental place on Kuhio beach right by the Lifeguard stand & bathrooms I know where going be bought out and may or may not be in business. Has anyone visited recently and know if they are still around?

When I was walking in the area, I wasn't planning to rent a chair and/or an umbrella so I really didn't pay any attention. I'm sorry I can't be of more help.

Renting umbrellas and beach chairs gets very expensive. Has anyone bought their own chairs/umbrella? Any rules regarding such? I was hoping ABC stores would have them available.

I bought a chair at Target in Honolulu for $17.00 and I had a normal sized umbrella I brought with me from home that worked ok and when I left, I left the chair at the Air B & B where I was staying.
