Beautiful scenery, extensive drive-thru (pay close attention to the signs, as there’s work underway!), excellent introductory films. The ironclad Cairo (pronounced KAY-row) ship exhibit is fascinating. The ranger was very knowledgeable and helpful. This was a very pleasant surprise, and although I thought I knew a lot about Vicksburg, I learned so much more.

As others have said, stop at the Visitors Center first and watch both the movie and short movie clips prior to driving the tour route. There is also an app you can download on your phone for free that gives additional information for designated stops/sites along the tour. Staff was very helpful with this and other information. Our family has visited a couple of Civil War battlefield sites but this is by far, the most detailed we've seen with signage and monuments describing what took place where, the soldiers and their leaders. Many trenches dug by the Union soldiers are still evident. Unfortunately, during our visit, there was some road construction that prevented us from seeing a few of the stops. Nevertheless, extremely interesting and well done.

We got here early in the morning soon after it opened. it's $20 per car, which I felt was a good price because we spent about 3 hours in this park. make sure to go into the visitor center first and watch the different films. there's a film in a theater with church pews in it, and that was very informative. there are also some short clips on the opposite end of the museum with just a handful of chairs. there's also a clean bathroom in this building.
once you get outside, you just drive through the park. there's not a lot of places to park and get out and walk, but there are a few. we mostly drove through but slowed down to read the signs and look at the exhibits outside.
the best part of this whole park were two things: the films in the visitor center and the USS Cairo ship that's at the end. you can walk all the way around it, take pictures, see the original wood, and read about how it was constructed. then you can go inside to look at some of the artifacts and things that they brought up when they salvaged the boat.
for me, this was the highlight of the visit. I highly recommend this to get some better depth of knowledge of history.
also, as a side note, the Hampton Inn is across the street from the entrance to the park, so it's a very convenient place to stay.

Very moving to drive round this brilliantly laid out military park, homage to one of the most important battles in the Civil War. Take time to watch the film in the visitor center.
Map was great and we could stop at areas of interest to us as we drove round.
We could almost hear and smell the sounds of war.
At $20 great value, well maintained and signposted.

Allow 2 hours to drive through this huge military park. There are countless monuments and many places to pull over and walk around if you'd like. Even with just mostly driving through and not stopping it took over an hour.

This Park is full of Civil War history. Allow at least a full day to visit, to do it justice. Be sure to see the Illinois Monument, Shirley House and the ironclad USS Cairo museum. There are over one thousand monuments and the Park is full of trenches and walking trails. Lots to see. The visitor's center has a video and an informational museum, as well as a gift store.

This is the site of a lengthy battle of the American civil war. The park was established in 1899 and included the entire siege and defence lines, but the city and roadways encroached and in the 1960’s the lower third was surrendered to the highway.
The park tour, which you do by car, is 16 miles long (25km) and there are numbered plaques along the way for significant stops. However, you can’t go more than 15 meters before there is a marker or monument to be seen. Red markers are the confederate lines and blue are the union lines. There is also a gun ship called the Cairo, it has its own museum onsite and it was used as a decoy up the river past the enemy so it actually covered the smaller ship by its side carrying ammunition and food supplies to the troops.
If you are a civil war buff, this is your Disneyland.
We were there for 3 hours but if it wasn’t raining we could have easily done another couple by getting out of the car more often and looking at the sights. I downloaded their app and you can play it while driving and it gives you info about each major stop. It was a really interesting place to see.

Fitting tributes throughout the park for the men who fought battles here. Seeing the landscape brought home why the men could be fighting near each other and never see each other.
Seeing this military park helps one understand the magnitude of the fighting, the number of men, the obstacles created by the landscape, and the Amazing leaders we had on both sides.

This site is the Holy Grail if you are a Civil War buff.
Beautifully preserved grounds. Amazing monuments. When we checked in at the gift shop, my teens were already busy putting on old costumes for Instagram photos, I loved the gift shop, then we all went in & watched a great short movie about Vicksburg before the drive through the Park.
The video tour made you hit on each monument one at a time to hear about it. Hard when driving. Would have been much easier if I could have just hit play & not fussed with it anymore.

Wow! That sums up the feeling we had as we traveled through this park. We did the audio tour on the app and it was great. We got out at some of the stops to look over the rolling landscape and humbled by the sacrifice both sides of this war suffered. We read about the memorials each state provided to honor their soldiers - stunning. Our favorite was the memorial put up by the state of Illinois. It had a beautiful echo my vocally gifted husband couldn't help but sing How Great Thou Art.

Can anyone comment on the phone guided tours during Covid restrictions? Were you happy with it? I am referencing a driver in a lead car talking to you by phone for the 2 hr tour. Thank you for comments.

We have the senior pass, so free for us. National Parks charge per car, not per person. I think it was $15. Well worth it for those who are interested in Civil War history.

The website says the park is closed to vehicles after 5 but open for walking. Is there walking access to areas of interest in the park - in other words, what can a visitor see after 5 pm? I plan to have some time in the park the next morning but would enjoy some evening time, too, if it’s available. Thanks, Chris Cordes

You can park at the visitor center and walk in to the battlefield. It is quite a walk but paved and pretty. Get the map so you know the short cuts. It is a lovely if challenging bike ride too.

can you drive a motor home thru the National Military Park? We will be visiting that area in April/May and will be doing a cross united statestrip in our Motor home and have no other vehicle to use. Thanks everyone!

Yes, guided tours are available, as are tours on CD. We spent about 4 hours, and didn't get to see everything (missed the Cairo!). If you go to the website for the Vicksburg National Military Park, you can find out about the guided tours.

I agree with the previous answer but I would make sure that you watch the movie in the ranger station before you do the self guided tour. Reading up on the battles before hand would also help enhance your experience.
