Fascinating. Well worth the stop to visit the remains of an ironclad vessel, read the story of its rise and fall and the efforts to raise it from the Yazoo river. Many artifacts from the U.S.S. Cairo nicely displayed in the museum building. Extensive care and effort have gone into this restoration project.

Included in the ticket for the Military Park and a must see.
What's left of the battleship is still being restored but it already looks very impressive. Small museum quite interesting but USS Cairo itself is amazing.

Most folks go to Vicksburg to see the battleground, and this Civil War-era ironclad is adjacent to the park and worth the extra time to visit. Small but excellent museum of artifacts, and you can walk on the old ship and get a feel for its history. Also sits up on the hills overlooking the Mississippi, great views.

An incredible piece of history right before our eyes! It is amazing to see in person this wood and iron ship that revolutionized naval warfare for a period of time in history.
You can walk all the way around and there are walkways and viewing areas over this naval vessel. Wheelchair and stroller friendly.
There is a small enclosed museum and gift shop near it. The gift shop had some excellent historical books about The Vicksburg battle and battlefield.

This was a stop in the Military Park - definitely worth stopping and spending some time to see this wreckage that was pulled up from the bottom of the Mississippi River.

There are so many things to love about this park!
1. It’s free!
2. The USS Cairo is easy to walk through on a short of boardwalk. Some reinforcements were added to the ship and give an idea of its original shape/size, but you can see the authentic structure.
3. It’s outside, but under a canopy so you are protected from sun and rain!
4. The museum is small but FULL of artifacts from the ship. There is also a lot of information about the crew, missions, etc.
5. There are indoor bathrooms and a gift shop.
6. There is ample parking (and from there you can also see the Union cemetery.)

This is an amazing renovation of the U.S.S. Cairo ironclad battleship. Visitors can walk inside the vessel and observe it from many angles. Fascinating exhibit!! The hours of the indoor museum are limited to certain days so keep that in mind as you plan your visit.

This historic ship is a wonderful display of our past. The preservation and display is amazing. The facts and artifacts of this ship are incredible. Worth the stop.

Seeing the restored ironclad, USS Cairo, was very interesting. It was one of the best parts of Vicksburg National Military Park. It was struck by two underwater torpedoes and sank in less than twelve minutes- with no loss of life!! A must see if in the park.

I have a 6 lb Yorkie who stays in a Pooch Pouch, kinda like a frontal baby carrier. Can I bring him inside. He is old and settled and won’t bark.

The best part of the museum is the ship itself, which is displayed outdoors under a tent-like roof. So even if you can't take your dog inside, it's still worth stopping off to view the boat and the accompanying signage.

I am not really sure, I did not see other dogs. The actual ship is undercover, but outside, so it would be ok I imagine. The inside portion with the artifacts, etc may not allow pets unless service animals. I bet you could check on line. Good luck!

Only designated service animals are allowed in Vicksburg National Military Park visitor facilities or on the USS Cairo gunboat exhibit.
