We had exactly the same experience as the previous reviewers in 2010 and I can only warn others NOT to book this 'accomodation'. Granted, our experience was in October 2008 but I feel our experience is relevant today as this SCAM is still cheating people out of their money and ruining their visit to beautiful Venice. We too booked through Venere, my husband a veteran in the hotel industry, and he was happy that everything appeared above board; deposit via credit card, 'updated ' photos of the accomodation and perfect for our needs (we had his disabled mother with us for the weekend). The apartment was advertised as being 2 streets from St Mark's Square. Perfect! We were informed by email that the letting agent would greet us at San Zaccaria, the ferry stop at St Mark's, and from there he would personally accompany us to the apartment. Great. We arrived at San Zaccaria and I can only say I only recognised our 'agent' due to the air of suspicion that surrounded him as he stood waiting...I did not like him on sight and immediately felt uneasy. He approached us and his smile switched off when he saw my mother-in-law with her zimmer. Off we set for our 'ten minute walk'..........40 minutes later we were still being led by this character through a maze of streets and alleyways with all our luggage (he offered no assistance in this area ) the children tiring and my mother-in-law struggling due to fact that as we got further away from St Mark's the street surfacing became cobbled and rough. We finally arrived at this dingy building set behind a restaurant in an alley, he open the door and we faced three flights of stone steps up to our apartment. Once inside it was clear we had been duped, we were not inside the apartment we had booked. There were two bedrooms, not three, one tiny kitchenette so small you could barely turn around in it and the bathroom/toilet was in a type of attic location up a steep step ladder off the landing outside the bedrooms. "How on earth we were going to get mum up that? " we asked him... At this point the man became impatient and menacing and demanded our payment of 450 euros (for 2 nights) - my husband had refused to pay him at the ferry pier as he initially demanded as we are seasoned travellers and never pay before we see the accomodation. In this case, being in a foreign city and clearly in the hands of a dishonest individual, it was a matter of be assertive and stand our ground or expose ourselves to a threatening situation. We had our children and an 82 year old woman with us so my husband decided it was safer to give him the money and be rid of him. He left and we never saw hide nor hair of him again. No contact phone number was left in case of problems, the only number we had belonged to a property we were not going to be staying at. In fact, when we went in search of the property we ASSUMED to have booked we discovered a restaurant there instead! no La Madoneta! The BEDSIT we were taken to had two bedrooms, one bathroom and one tiny kitchenette - nothing else, no sitting area anywhere and no chairs or sofa to even sit on. The cord had been removed from the washing machine (it had been disabled obviously), two towels, no toilet paper, a grubby microwave and a small bar fridge that needed a clean. I can only assume that we were given someone's own flat for three days, possibly while they were away, or it belonged to 'Don Corleone' himself, because it had the look and feel that it was not a rental property but a private flat being used as part of this scam. It looked too well lived in for our liking....Calls to the agent office went unanswered, emails on our return were ignored. We filed a complaint with Venere but got no joy from them (French company, what do you expect?). Venice itself was a joy and a revelation, it was October but it only lightly showered on our last day. It was a nightmare getting my mother-in-law to the toilet and up and down the stairs outside, the alley outside smelled of urine. Due to our location - which I could not even tell you its whereabouts to this day except that a small supermarket was opposite our alley, I cannot even find it on a map. The message here is BEWARE - if they request payment in cash on arrival REFUSE! pay by credit card and ask for directions and make your own way so you cannot be lead elsewhere and if you do get somehow misled then contact your bank, report fraud and request they recover the credit card payment. In that case you will be on your own but at least you wont be in a threatening situation with an unsavoury character. Next time it will be a hotel for us.

Our experience was exactly the same as the previous review word for word we were messed around for days and we complained to venere with no satisfaction .The money was taken from our account before we left the U. K. We do not believe that this apt. was ever available to rent it was all a big scam so avoid la madoneta at all cost & the service from Venere was dreadful so just beware.

Firstly, I want to say that I'm only giving this place a rating of one because this system does not allow you to give zero. I booked this apartment through Venere for a party of six friends travelling to Venice for a w'end stay. Venere showed this as a five-bed, two-bathroom apt, with accomodation for 8 persons. It all seemed to be going fine, until we met a rep who was to take us to the apt [who arrived nearly an hour late - that should have been our first clue!]. He brought us to a TINY two-bed one-bath flat and told us this was the place we booked when I told him that this wasn't the apt we were supposed to be in. What followed was a two hour argument on the phone with another person [Christine was her name if memory serves] who told us that there was a water leak in a bathroom the La Madoneta apt and we either had to stay in this one or cancel our booking. Of course, we had no where else to stay, and thus very little choice. We were offered a meagre 10% discount on the cost of our original booking which we refused. They offered 15% and dinner for the group - again we refused - why should we pay a mere 15% off the price of a 5-bed apt, which was still probably more than the total cost of this 2-bed apt, which, by the way, was intened for four people. They had put two horrid, uncomfortable camp beds - one in each bedroom, in order to be able to squash the six of us in. What made us suspicious was that we were refused access to be able to see the La Madoneta apt - as we thought that even if one bathroom was out of order, that we could survive on the other. They did not want us to come to their office to discuss it - in fact they would not even tell us where the office was. And despite my asking a number of times to speak to the owner/manager - he never once called me back. We rang Venere to complain, and the La Madoneta folks told them we would be moved to the original apt the following day. This turned out to be a complete lie as the office did not contact us again for the remainder of our stay, despite saying that they would. I could go on and on about how horribly we were treated, and how awful this experience was - but I will finish up on this: When I got home, I checked with my credit card company and was told that the La Madonta had charged over €450 to my credit card THREE DAYS BEFORE we arrived. despite the contract stating that “Your credit card will not be charged by Venere.com. Payment is to be made directly to the hotel at the end of your stay.“ I never agreed to this payment, I was not informed this payment would be taken from my card, and I was not issued with a receipt for this charge. Venere had given my Visa details to the apt renters, and given the date of the charge, that would lead me to believe that they knew exactly what they were doing and had planned not to give us this apt all along. I suggest avoiding these people AT ALL COSTS - both La Madoneta, who also are called "Dimora" AND Venere. I have made a complaint to Venere, and if they do anything to compensate us I will post here again.
